Hey!! I didn’t see that anyone else had made this thread already so I figured I would.
Who has applied to NCWIT this year??
Hey!! I didn’t see that anyone else had made this thread already so I figured I would.
Who has applied to NCWIT this year??
Me! I was a regional winner last year.
Nice to see other women in computing here…
I plan on applying to it next year (junior year)! I’m not sure if I could win in it though. I’ve just gotten involved in computer and science coding this year so I’m worried that my lack of experience and lack of time spent in STEM would result in me not getting anything out of applying to NCWIT. Is it difficult to win on the regional and national level?
Oh, and best of luck to both @mjioa9 and @Bookgal12 !
@needtosucceed27 It is much easier to win on a regional than a national level. Without a lot of experience/achievements in STEM but strong essays and some experience you can win regionally. To win nationally you have to have taken leadership positions and most likely achieved a major feat. I would definitely apply, you still have a strong chance regionally. Winning regionally provides a lot of opportunities for internships, jobs, and other perks.
Thank you!
Lmk if you have other questions
I’m a junior and I applied this year! I think I can win regionally, and it’d be great if I got a national award too.
To anyone who’s won before: how has winning specifically helped you? I’m aware of the possible perks, like @Bookgal12 mentioned, but the list doesn’t provide much insight into how it’s actually impacted people haha.
@radiant The people from NCWIT and people who have won create a huge spreadsheet of scholarship opportunities . A lot of these scholarships are unknown but can be really helpful especially to seniors applying to college. I am currently a junior also and am currently applying to many scholarships I wouldn’t have known about otherwise. The facebook group (you can only join if you win) has also given me insight on tech summer programs and internships and many people in the facebook group are somehow connected and can recommend you. Example: yesterday someone who is an engineer at spotify posted an internship opportunity and is willing to refer people in the facebook group.
People who work for NCWIT will legit write recommendations for you for super prestigious tech awards also.
Last year I was quoted in a famous online newspaper (I’m not going to give the name for privacy reasons) in an article someone wrote about AP CS which a lot of people saw.
A lot of the girls in the group attend prestigious universities and if you ask them will give you a tour wherever they go and often introduce you to staff on campus.
You also have a community of people who will practically help you with anything. There are groups to ask for help with AP CS classes (I’ve gotten a lot of help there), mental wellbeing, robotics, etc.
When it comes to jobs (when graduating college) a lot of people in the facebook group have connections to help you and often can write recommendations for you. It also happens that many people have been on interviews with companies that you may be applying to and can give advice for interviews. I have some friends who have gotten jobs because of connections from NCWIT.
I applied!
Does anyone know when the results come out?
@Bookgal12 Thanks so much for giving some examples! Those opportunities sound incredibly valuable - hope I win something!
@7T01R01
I think national award winner decisions are announced end of December (if they finish reviewing in time) and regional is supposed to be announced in January. i won regional last year but wasn’t notified until January 31st. Since even more people applied this year it may take even longer!
Okay
Thanks! @Bookgal12
Has anyone heard anything yet?
National winner will be notified tomorrow! @mjioa9
That’s so exciting!! Good luck everyone!
Any news yet?
Has anyone been notified yet for National?
No news yet…anyone else?
Where did you see that they were notifying winners today?
@Mirandarwallace I won regionally last year so I am in the winner fb group. The people in charge announced the notification date there.
When do you think regional winners will be announced this year? I’m in north Alabama and doubting I’ll get a national award but still waiting lol. Any more news?
I heard the national award email was sent out
