I was just wondering if anyone was in the know as to how serious ND really is about their waitlist and if they usually do take alot of people from it. No matter what I am definitely going to stay on the list and do whatever it takes to increase my chances but I was just curious as to what realistic chances those of us on the waitlist do have and if any one thought there was any truth the rumor that most of these top colleges were holding down their acceptances knowing that they could always take kids off the waitlist.

There was a post about this not long ago but ND does use its waitlist and usually takes a good amount off of it, so it isn't just lip service if that helps you.

THank you irish for that reassurance... i have this strange confidence that if i do everything i plan on doing that I will have agood chance of getting in.. I just keep worrying that my luck this will be a year where they decide to take no one off of the list

Im a soph at ND and I actually got in on the waitlist. Ive also met several people who enertered on the waitlist. It is possible, but you must let the ADCOM know that you really want to go here. Send letters, have your parents call, write emails.... everything.

ditto on people getting in off the waitlist. From my HS class there were either 14 or 15 who applied, I forget the actual number. I know 8 applied EA though, and of those 6 made it in, 1 was deferred, 1 was denied. The regular pool, I think another 2 or 3 were accepted. In the end 6 people came from my HS, one of whom actually came off the waitlist. I don't know if this makes a difference, but I know my HS has a long-standing relationship with ND in the sense that ND's admissions dept is familiar with the calibre and quality of our HS's program since anywhere from 10-20 people apply from my school each year and at any one point there are between 15-25 students spread out between the 4 years at ND.

thanx ghipp... i definitely plan on letting them know how much i want to go there and i've already started but i guess now its just up to luck

I was also accepted off the waitlist last year... I agree with everything the above said minus the having your parents call. Call yourself and show them that you're seriously interested and willing to put in the effort. I got the impression that the ADCOMS respected that I was calling myself (though it wasn't a strategic maneuver, haha I just like dealing with things on my own). Send updated grades, let them know about those straight As (don't let senioritis set in) and fight it with all you've got. I remember one night thinking about it and just coming to the decision that I was going to fight it with everything I had, I'd show them that I wanted to be there and if it didn't work out atleast I had tried. Look through some of my other posts on similar threads for any other tips.

I was persistent and now I'm at one of the best Universities in the country, and I love it. If anyone has any particular questions.. send me a private message and I'll try to get back to you soon.

I was also waitlisted and feeling similar concerns about this being the year where they need no one from the list. But my question is if you DO get accepted off the waitlist, how long do they give you to reply? Because I've hear its only 24 hours at some schools?

Ill give you this example:
My school usually gets around 15 acceptances and a few waitlists (maybe 5). Last year, if I remember what my friend told me, it was either 3 or 4 that got off the waitlist. That may not be the case for every school, but it was for mine. In any case, the waitlist is serious stuff, not like other schools (ahem WashU) that just put loads of students on the waitlist. At ND, the waitlist is actually worth being on.

According to USNews (that gets its data from the Common Data Set). In the 2004 cycle ND offered 840 a spot on its waitlist. 574 accepted a spot on the waitlist. 129 were accepted from the waitlist. A 22% chance of getting in off the waitlist that year.

Generally speaking, waitlist acceptances are pretty variable year to year so don't put too much stock in this information.
