ND Engineering Admissions Question

Hi, I have a quick question. Does anyone know how applying as an engineering major affects the admission chances at Notre Dame? It seems like many engineering applicants have higher than average stats (for the school), and I'm wondering if it is harder to be accepted for engineering. Accepting any response, so please post any thoughts! Thanks

I would think the only way it will affect your admissions decision is how they look at your stats. If you're applying as prospective engineering major, I'd think they would look a little harder at your science and math stats and would be more willing to forgive less than stellar scores in humanities-type subjects.

Sorry, Andy, but that's not true.

Everyone applies to ND's program of First Year Studies. You don't pick a college to enter until the end of freshman year. You don't apply to a specific school within the University, so there are no special considerations based on (intended) major.

kevdude is absolutely correct. And, many who think that they want to major in Engineering find out rather quickly (according to Soph son Eng major) that they do NOT want to major in engineering after all! If you are an engineering intent, you will take an Intro to Eng course your freshman year. Also according to son, half of that class of 400 students in the fall of 06 transferred to other majors after their first semester. He was surprised to say the least! But, back to the OP, the First Year Studies program is phenomenal. It allows some flexibility for changes of majors, etc. Therefore, ND really does not look at your stats based on a particular major.

I'm taking an Ohio State Intro to Eng. course in high school this year and quickly finding out I'm not so interested in engineering anymore, either. It's good that they have such a class, though, so you aren't in too deep when you decide engineering's not for you.

There are stories of Engineering professors calling their classes "Intro to Business."

I actually heard a rumor that putting Engineering as your major on the app (for girls) actually increases your chances because there are so few girls in the program? Not sure on the validity of that though...

keddy: That theory didn't work out for DD a couple of years ago. She was waitlisted ED and accepted by more selective schools RD.
