ND,Rice, Wash U-you decide

any help with this decision appreciated. Does anyone know how to get stats on admission to grad school for engineering, medicine?

Personally, I'd be torn between Rice and Notre Dame. I know more about Rice's engineering and it is excellent. Notre Dame is a classic, and the engineering is very good. Wash U is not a school I'd consider, though I have a friend who will go their and she's really excited about it. I don't like how they flood my mailbox with tacky junkmail. I think Texas sounds like a better climate than Indiana. Just my opinion though....and I'm no expert.

i think Rice has the best reputation for Engineering, but U Dub has become so popular, accepting more and more out of staters. their sports are great...

All three are great universties...and all three have great pre-med programs. However, in terms of Engineering, I would say Rice is clearly the best of the three and at Medical school placement, I would say Wash U is hard to beat. In terms of atmosphere, they are all completely different from one another, so you will have to go for fit.

Notre Dame has the highest yield of these three schools, by a significant margin, indicating that students who apply really want to go there. The little known secret about Wash U, despite its rise in the U.S. News rankings, is that it is still a second choice for many students -- with a low yield and a very low position in a recent ranking based on schools chosen above other schools to which students are accepted. Rice has about a 40% yield. Its a good school on a pretty campus in Houston, but still quite Texas-centric in its student body composition. Rice historically has focused on science and engineering. Notre Dame has the best national reputation of the three.

I wouldnt choose on any criteria between these three except fit, the academic/ reputation differences are too small.

There is no school in the country that anyone should choose over Notre Dame, unless their is a large difference in aid.

I would LOVE to be in your position next year. Those three schools are in my top 4! Could you post your stats? As for which school, I'd probably go with Rice for engineering.

SAT 1480, SATII 780, 730, 700. Top 2% 5's on all AP's. Regular kinds of ec's and recs. No real hook.

Thanks for advice. Figure I have only one more week to decide.

My son has a very good friend at Rice who likes it very much, but you kind of get the best of all worlds at ND: academics, personal and academic support, athletics, residence life, alumni network, beautiful campus, etc.

I'm from an ND family; my sibling's a freshman there. I'm also looking at Rice, but I can't get away from the fact that it's in Texas (ick). I love ND bc of its alumni connections and the spirit there. I went for a football game in the fall and there was a peprally in the basketball place--it was PACKED. I'm not from a spirited school, but its relaly really amazing to see kinship like that. I will say, however, that the classes are harder than my bro expected and he's in a pretty big intro to science class. I say ND, but obviously it's your decision. hope this helps!

Rice has a 70,000 seat football stadium that usually has about 5000 people rattling around in it for a football game. Houston is Gulf Coast hot and sticky for 5-8 months of the year, but of course has no snow or consistent freezing weather as you would find in Northern Indiana (or St. Louis). Rice is much smaller than ND, with an undergrad student body of less than 3000. Rice is not well known to the general public outside of Texas despite its strong programs. Rice used to be Rice Insitute and was traditionally a heavy science and math oriented school, although it has broadened and for example now has a good music school, etc. Although there are trees on the campus, particularly the older part on the east end near Hermann Park, some of the rest of the campus is pretty bleak. Culturally, Rice would be a relative bastion of liberalism in the sea of conservatism that is Houston and Tx.

I would select ND over Rice or Wash U.

To be more accurate, Rice averages about 20,000 in attendance for football games --but I think that can still be described as "rattling around" in Rice's 70,000 seat stadium.

Rice, from what I've experienced, has a terrific music prgm...I saw its Horn professor at our local symphony and the guy was a GOD...most amazing horn player I ever saw. (I play the horn, in case you didn't guess).

I'm torn between Dartmouth and Notre Dame...

Son was rejected from both Rice and Notre Dame but if he had had his choice, ND would have been 1st. Both are good schools and have beautiful campuses. If you are from the South, however, coming out of Rice will give you good connections and if you are from the North, ND will be a better known name.

ChrisCuber - how awesome you got into Dartmouth. I am from So Cal, and only about one or two get in there a year from my school. Everyone there LOVES it. One of my good friends got in there last year, and he is having a great time. He actuallly got really sick, and the admin, faculty and students were so helpful, it was incredible. They really support their sports, and academically it is outstanding...

groundhog, rice is actually very well known by students in so cal. lots of people from my school apply there. it is considered one of the very top. my sister's good friend is a current sophomore there, and she loves it. socially, she is having a blast. in fact, my sister hears far more about that, than the academics! for what it's worth...
