ND waitlist question

Hi, I was recently waitlisted at ND, and I will do anything to go there. My stats are strong:

I'm an Irish Catholic Male
ACT: 34
GPA: 4.25 weighted, 3.86 unweighted
I took pretty much the most rigorous course load available.
No varsity sports, but i played recreational baseball and golf throughout high school, good extracurriculars, lots of community service, NHS.

I did not visit this year because I visited 2 years ago, but I think I might not have shown enough interest this year. So, would visiting in the next few weeks improve my chances? I am already writing a letter, and our awards ceremony next week, so I will continue to update my file.

Also, I have seen these things on the internet that say they will help you with your appeal to the school, but these seem like they are just trying to get desperate people like myself to give them money. Has anyone tried these would they be worth they money?

Is there anything else I can possibly do to improve my chances?

One last question, would additional recommendations help?

Thanks,
Ryan

These are just my personal opinions but I was never waitlisted so I am just going off of the experiences of my friends as well as what I have read over the years. I would certainly not pay any of those services which try to go to bat with you, I think they are just trying to take advantage of the situation plus the school is interested in you and not in them anyways. I also don't think that visiting will help and not visiting hurt. However, what I think is key is getting in touch and updating your file, like you are doing, with any awards you receive. I also would get in touch with your local ND rep and talk with them about things you can do. I doubt they would tell you to send more recommendations unless they were something new and big but I have ben wrong before. Definately update your file and get in touch with them and just tell them how badly you want to come and ask what you can do. Trust me, this is more than 95% of the other people on the waitlist do.

Good luck! Let me know if there is anything I can do to help!

thanks for the fast response irish. I knew that those services were probably not a good idea, but I'm desperate and willing to try anything. Anyways, thanks for the help. Is there anything in particular that should be in my letter aside fromshowing my desire to go to the school and informing them of any achievements? One last thing, when I called the admissions office to ask these questions, the woman seemed very busy and sounded like she did not have time to talk to me. Is there anyone in particular that I should ask to talk to when i call the office of admissions?

If you have talked to the rep that is responsible for your home state, which is usually the one that will go to the college fairs, I would talk with them. They are your best bet. I would send in new awards and grades and things of that nature but don't stress it too much either...you can only do so much, you know? I know it is hard because you feel like it all comes down to this, but really those are the things I would send in and I would keep getting in touch with admissions so that they know how badly you want to come (but if they aren't open to talking with you or it doesn't feel right, I wouldn't force it).

Congrats on getting to where you are and good luck! Remember, there is only so much you can do (unfortunately) so do what you can and leave the rest to God! I hope that helps but I definately wrote this post in two sittings so I hope it makes sense!

When should we start hearing about the waitlist?

pretty soon I should think but I forget when it happened last year

After ND receives all of the deposits and organize their incomming class.

MOST schools send out wait list acceptances in late May and early June. However, you could still hear back until early August.

the suspense is killing me too...

does anyone know when the last time Notre Dame didnt accept anyone from the waitlist was?

No idea but I think ND pretty much always takes some people off the list, the question is how many. I would assume that some will come off that list, it has been that way the last few years to the best of my knowledge.

I believe it was three or four years ago that ND actually had more students say yes than they had room for. It was a real problem for housing. They did not go to the waitlist that year.

I personally know at least one person from the high school graduating classes of 2002, 2003, and 2004 who got into ND off the waiting list so I don't know if that is accurate. They may have taken very few, but I know for sure in those years at least they did accept students because I have friends who were on those waiting lists.

CK i'm also on the waitlist and have thought about this many a time. The only thing i have to take solace in is that if they let that happen one time, barring statistical anomoly, I guarantee you that they won't let it happen again. They seem to like being in control of things and it seems they have things figured out pretty well because the numbers seem about the same every year.

qwertyuiopasd,

I was never waitlisted and I do not know the procedure. However, I would visit ND and schedule an appointment with someone (Go as high as you can! - Dean of Admissions??). When arranging this appointment, begin by saying something like, "I will be visiting campus and I have a few questions about my app., etc.

Good Luck!

Has anyone on the waitlist heard anything yet?

nope, still waiting

Ive heard other schools such as duke and cornell have started taking kids off the WL

I guess this coming monday the waitlist movement may start... at least i am hoping

6 kid applied to ND from kids HS. 1 denied, 1 waitlisted, 1 going and 3 declined. I am still amazed at the 3 declined but all are going to great schools otherwise. hopefully that gets a few off the list but the rumor is too many accepted.

where did you hear that "rumor" j/c
