Near done with IGETC, help with transfer questions to UCI

<p>Hi all -
First time here on the board and am hoping someone can give me some advice or their experience regarding my situation. I am 30 years old and am nearly done with all my required classes for transfer to UCI in the Business Admin or Business Econ route, through UCI they offer TAG for the Business Econ major but do not offer TAG for the Business Admin program. My dilemma is that fresh out of high school I attended junior college and really didn't take it seriously and as a result had quite a few poor grades and W's which I have since retaken all of these classes and passed with A's, it was 10 years ago and that isn't so much my main concern. In the last year and a half I've gotten an A on 14 out of 15 with the last class being a B and also been on the dean's list for many consecutive semesters. I believe by the time I am finished with my last couple remaining courses I should have somewhere around a 3.5 GPA. Hoping this is enough to get into UCI, I will apply to Fullerton as a backup but would really prefer not to settle @ Fullerton as my main drive has been to get into UCI but will go to Fullerton if I must. The main issue I am facing and for which my J.C. counselor couldn't really confirm was that 10 years back I took micro and macro econ courses and got a C in both. I petitioned my junior college and they allowed me to retake these courses recently and I earned an A in both courses yet because the grades were a passing grade they would not remove nor put an R next to these prior grades. I know that the UC schools only take into account the first passing class for calculating your GPA in regards to consideration, however my fear is that they will not accept me into a Business major or I will be disqualified through the TAG program into Business Econ because they will only acknowledge the first passing grade. Does anyone have any experience with this? Really wish I would have known this long before and I would have went to a different J.C. and started fresh. Hoping they consider the time gap and can see that based on my math scores and recent grade in the class that I am qualified. Anyone that has any experience, your feedback is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

<p>I’m certainly no expert, but it does seem that your TAG might be voided by those C’s. The UC site explicitly states you cannot repeat a course other than D’s/F’s, and under the TAG agreement for B.E. you need at least a B for micro/macro. Whether or not your CC allowed you to retake those courses may be irrelevant. You still have a shot through regular admission though. </p>

<p>Speak directly to a UCI counselor for a definitive answer. They’re pretty quick to respond and helpful. Hell, my CC counselor didn’t know what TAG was…</p>

<p>Art2cs is right. Business Economics explicitly requires at least B’s in Micro/Macro.</p>

<p>I don’t see them favoring the A’s over the C’s because imagine how many other applicants would be at a disadvantage if they also have a couple C’s on their apps regardless of the time gap. CC’s do some weird things. Even without TAG you still have a good shot. BE isn’t impacted and you have great grades.</p>

<p>emprex and art2cs, Thanks for the feedback, are you able to apply for multiple majors in the even that you don’t get accepted for your primary choice? Im hoping they can acknowledge my A’s in regards to my ability even if they factor the C’s for the GPA. I guess I can give a brief explanation in my personal statement. It seems rather silly that in retrospect getting a D previously would have been better! At least with a D being repeated the A would factor in, the logic behind this seems somewhat flawed, but hey, the system is what it is, and we must all work within it.</p>

<p>This may be a dumb but how is it that you’ve managed to get virtually all A’s in your classes, but your projected GPA is only 3.5?</p>

<p>Well factoring in the two C’s from my first round of micro and macro econ, and from my grades 10 years ago, a few classes are B’s and there is another C or two in there I believe. My last year and a half has been virtually all A’s but my previous stint weighs on the GPA a bit unfortunately.</p>

<p>Oh I see, anyways… I’m rooting for you man! We have similar stories and I’ll also be in my early thirties by the time i’m ready to transfer. Good luck</p>

<p>For what it’s worth, you mentioned that you should have enrolled at another JC to start “fresh”. That’s not really possible because the UCs require you to report the grades from any and all institutions. Even if it was 10 years ago or 20 years ago for that matter. They’re extremely strict about that and if they find out and it’s reported that they audit approximately 10% of their applicants, they can ban you for admission consideration that cycle and in future cycles. Essentially you can be banned for life for applying at the UCs.</p>
