Nearly 100 students at San Diego State arrested in drug bust

SAN DIEGO -- Authorities say nearly 100 students have been arrested at San Diego State University on drug-related charges.

Drugs, cash and guns were seized from sellers and buyers in the bust that followed a five-month undercover operation.

The San Diego County district attorney's office says the 96 arrests include fraternity members. Defendants are scheduled to appear in state court to face charges Tuesday afternoon.

Uh-oh...looks like some of those parents are going to have to put the twin bed back in the workout room...

idiots...nice going.

Just the phone call every parent wants from their college student, " Uh, Mom, can you come bail me out?"

Yeah, bail him out and then give him a two second head start cause I'm gonna give him a serious case of whoop-ass.

I wish that it were more than 100...maybe then my friends that go there could get into the classes they need to graduate!

It is well known that drugs are rampant in college campuses across the country. I know all parents (including me) think "not my child" ....but for those of us sending our kids away for the first time, this certainly does not help to diminish our anxiety.

I think the kids who go to college and drink and party to excess were the ones who A)were party people already or B) whose parents kept them under lock and key.

If your child made a conscience choice not to drink to excess and party like an animal in high school (and let's assume that they had opportunity but CHOSE not to), then when they get to college, they have their head on straight and continue to make good choices.

The kids whose parents hovered like there was no tomorrow are (IMO) the ones who are going to get to college and do all stuff they couldn't do at home.

" WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Authorities have arrested nearly 100 people and seized guns and drugs in a sting operation at San Diego State University in California, the Drug Enforcement Administration said Tuesday.

Officials say the evidence seized includes 50 pounds of marijuana, four pounds of cocaine and 350 ecstasy pills.

Among those arrested were 75 students, some of them working toward criminal justice or homeland security degrees. One criminal justice major was charged with possession of guns and cocaine, authorities said.

One student sent a mass text message offering a "sale" on cocaine, the DEA said in a news release.

Campus police and the DEA began their undercover operation after the death of a student from an overdose in May 2007, the news release said. A second overdose death occurred as recently as February at a fraternity house.

"DEA agents infiltrated several student drug distribution cells and more than 130 drug purchases and seizures were made" during the investigation known as Operation Sudden Fall, the news release said."

A key quote from the article not to be missed -

The investigation was launched after a student died of a cocaine overdose a year ago.

Shirley Jennifer Poliakoff, 19, was found dead on the morning of May 6, 2007 in her Aztec Corner apartment. She was a member of Alphi Phi sorority.

A county Medical Examiner's investigator said Poliakoff died from acute cocaine and ethanol intoxication. The death was ruled accidental.

During the course of the investigation, a second drug overdose near campus was reported. In February, a 22-year-old Mesa College student was was found dead of an accidental cocaine oversdose in an SDSU fraternity house.

I know students who did choose not to use drugs in h.s., but changed in college. One simply can't predict what students will do in new environments.

The marijuana overdose death toll remains at zero...

Wow, fraternity kids with drugs? Shocking. Not. What a bunch of morons. We don't need people like that running the world in the future.

Replace "fraternity" with "college", and you're getting more accurate.

"Among those arrested were 75 students, some of them working toward criminal justice or homeland security degrees. One criminal justice major was charged with possession of guns and cocaine, authorities said."

guess they'll have to join the military instead.

Here, here! I'm all for these mothers' pointless aggression toward these unknown drug users, especially those marijuana smokers! Why would those kids put their lives on the line by smoking marijuana!? They should use safer, legal drugs, like adderall, hydrocodon, or xanax. I mean, at least those drugs are legal and therefore harmless and unable to be abused.

Tens - hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of drugs, cash AND FIREARMS. This wasn't a few kids having fun - this was a major operation.

I wonder what this will do to SDSU's USNews ranking? Or wait - I don't think US News takes major drug deals into account... just important stats like the percentage of alumni who donate. lol.

Rlh, those drugs are legal only if the prescription is for YOU. And they are of the class that make a lot of doctors think twice about prescribing. If you are caught with any those without a legal scrip for them, you are going to be in trouble. Because those drugs can be dangerous, it is really a serious problem with kids who have the scrips selling them to others.

THe problem with marijuana is first and foremost that it is illegal. That also puts it into the class of the cocaine, guns and drug dealers that were somehow on the scene with the pot. There are going to be some kids who will be losing financial aid eligibility and they may also get thrown out of school for this. Not to mention that they are going to have to go through the expensive and painful legal paces. If they get this on their record, they are out as far as a number of careers and jobs go as well. Not worth it.
