Nearly Impossible to get an A?

Along with many other people here, I'm going for the ivy leagues. But in three of my AP classes the teachers hardly give anyone As. In my AP Lang class, no one has gotten an A for about 7 years and I have the highest grade with a B. For APUSH, I think 1 person has an A among a hundred or so students. For Ap Chem, no one has even an B+ and I have the highest grade with a B. Will this kill my chances at Ivies?

Colleges consider your grades in the context of your school.

Sure, grades are important. Ivy leagues do take GPA into great consideration. But the person you are and the things you are compassionate about, the things you are doing and what you want to do with your life, is more important to those Ivy Leagues. So I’d say no, your few Bs will not completely murder your chances at Ivies. Showing them that you did something significant with your life, what you achieve, your activities, outstanding standardized test scores, great recs, and killer essays will get you a spot somewhere up there. Grades may seem like it is everything when it comes down to applying for prestigious colleges, but it really isn’t always. Contradicting, but true. That is why every year, students with high GPAs gets turned down occasionally and a few of those students with average high school GPAs get accepted regularly. Plus, Colleges do consider your grades in the context of your school. With your grades at your school, you are probably in the top 5%? 2%? You still got this.

Colleges know that each high school has their own way of grading. So, as previously stated, they will look at your grades in the context of your school. Also, you can show your proficiency in the class when the AP test comes around. That’s a standardized test so the colleges can use that score to assess how well you know the material, and can compare that to other high schoolers’ scores. Don’t worry too too much about a B or two. Schools, especially the Ivies, want to see that you challenged yourself at your school and did well.
