NEC Thoughts?

Does anyone know anything about the dorms at NEC? Are they as bad as the rumours would have it? Can graduate students live in the dorms, too?

I am curious what rumors you have heard about NEC dorms.
Yes graduate students can live in the dorms. The graduate students are often given the singles on the upper floors.

The dorms at NEC are dorms. They are a lot like many of the dorms I have seen at colleges and universities all over the country. And they at least are not totally decrepit and there is not mold throughout, like the dorms were at Columbia University. They are not super modern and they have not been remodeled. But they are perfectly acceptable and clean. And they have the advantage of being well located and that is important when living in a city. You can literally roll out of bed and be on the steps of Jordon Hall. The library and cafeteria are in the same building.

The food plan is not the greatest, but again it is manageable and at least if you live in the dorms you do not need to take time to grocery shop and cook. I am told the food is better this year than last year, so maybe they altered their plan with Armark (the company that handles most MA colleges’ dining).

When we looked at NEC a few years back, we liked the dorms and of course the convenient location described above.

If you’re a grad student you’re probably going to be happier living off-campus no matter what school you attend. I noticed on another thread that you have some health issues related to dining and atmosphere–another reason you might be happier off-campus. But the best way to figure this out would be to visit during your audition.

The dorm at NEC is okay (they have only the one), it is no worse than the dorm I was in at NYU back in the day, it was built in the late 50’s , cinderblock construction, pretty basic dorm…but it isn’t horrible, either. The cafeteria isn’t the greatest, but it isn’t horrible, either. Given it is an older building, I have heard of things like the hot water being out, or the wi fi being slow and not working great, but I have heard that about dorms all over (well, okay, slow wi fi at MIT or Stanford would probably cause civil war to break out lol). And yeah, it is much better than Columbia’s dorms were, my brother went there and when he was there, they were pretty bad. And the dorm is very conveniently located, it is right across from Jordan hall and the classroom building is on the block behind the dorm, so you won’t be trudging for blocks through the cold or rain…

It would be an odd decision to pick a conservatory for its dorm… but in the event that someone would decided to do that they’d probably pick Colburn.

I agree, for price and for the incredible facilities, there is a lot to be said for Colburne, they have amazing facilities there. The cafeteria is even incredible, looks like a cafe, not a student cafeteria, and the rest of the facilities are amazing, too.

I heard that NEC is totally renovating their dorm building (this coming summer I believe.) Both the main building with Jordan Hall and the St. Botolph building underwent significant renovations last summer.

Visited NEC last fall and even though their dorms are being renovated it will take a while before you can live in them and there is not much space.

Most people can only live in dorms for their first year simply because there isn’t enough room.
