i want to be premed and i have a few questions....

is it better for me to get an extremely high gpa at a lower ranked school or is it better for me to get a mediocre gpa at a top school?

also, if i go with the upper level school, should i aim for a school that has notorious weed out programs or another upper level school?

thanks for the advice.

The higher GPA is almost always better, btu it really depends on the schools.

well the lower ranked school would be either Spelman or Miami in Ohio. the upper ranked school would be either Harvard, WashU, Columbia, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Williams, or Pomona.

In that case, definitely go to the Upper ranked school, they have way better placement rates.

so, if i go with the upper ranked school, should i go to a school like Johns Hopkins with a notorious weed out program, or should i go to a school like Pomona or something?

If you can go to Harvard, WashU, Williams or Pomona those are the best on your list. Harvard and Williams seem better to me for some reason...look at this link:

yeah well harvard and williams are more highly ranked.

so do you think it would be more favorable if i got a 3.7 at harvard versus a 4.0 at Spelman or Miami-Ohio. (i know the ideal situation would be to get a 4.0 at harvard).

I'd say the 3.7 at harvard; even though it has a rep from rampant grade inflation anymore, that doesn't apply to science courses generally, and the increased quality of education and rigour would better prep you for the MCAT. Plus, since a 3.5 will generally get you into at least one med school with a decent MCAT score, given such high hypothetical gpas, the institution you attend probably would carry a lot of weight.

haha, i plan on working my a.s.s off in college (something i did not do enough of in high school) so that i can achieve those gpas.

the rampant humanities inflation at a school like harvard or williams also gives you the benefit of having a recourse to boost your gpa should you not do so well in a science class or two, which in all liklihood will happen at least a couple of times, as curves are generaly set so only about 20% of the class is in the A/A- range

Harvard easily....I am telling you this case is closed go to the better school because the ones on your list are pretty grade inflated and it shouldn't be too hard to get a 3.5+...simple enough

thanks for the advice everyone.
