Necessary to be an architect if I learn architecture?

Hi, often times, I've heard that college majors and careers are not necessarily related. But then I'm majoring in architecture (college hasn't started yet) and the expectations are high. Is it okay if my career is not related to architecture but something to do with the arts?

No, once you learn architecture, you’re locked behind its walls forever. Sorry.

Whether you use your major or not is up to you. I think the data that has been collected says around 40% to 50% of workers are not in the field of their undergrad major. I majored in electrical engineering, worked as a software engineer for 5 years then went into marketing for 20+ years. For the last 5 years I have been teaching 8th grade math.

Aza, you can certainly do anything you want with your degree. If you are entering a a four year BS/BA in Arch degree, then you will get an interesting perspective and can use your education for a lot of things. However I would not go into a five year BArch degree thinking I might want to do something else in life. The degree is just too focused and too much work if you are not inspired by architecture. If you love what you are doing, then architecture studio can be highly rewarding. If you don’t love it, it can just be a beating…

Though I can easily take a BA in architecture, it’s a hard decision for me to continue to Masters in Architecture. I’d like to learn architecture, but I wouldn’t want to take a further step into professional degree. To be honest, college hasn’t started yet. Maybe my opinion will change.

I met with a teacher at Illinois Institute of Technology a couple weeks ago and asked him how their graduates are doing finding jobs in the current economy. He told me that since architecture firms are firing rather than hiring, alot of their graduates went into the industrial design field and got jobs at Crate & Barrel. I guess when you get an architecture degree, you can pretty much do anything design related.
