Necessary to get internet in res?

It's about $50/month and my parents are trying to persuade me to use the school's library's computers to search the internet. Is this a wise decision? I have a laptop that I've bringing with me, but they just want me to use it to type up homework, etc. From the McGill website it looks like some of the libraries on campus stay open very late/very early in the morning.

CAD 500 sounds a lot to me. Is there anyway to cut down the cost besides using a wireless router?

Just leech your neighbour's network.

Yes, when I heard that McGill didnt have internet, I almost didn't believe it. colleges these days don't even use internet as a key feature anymore becasue it's so standard. $50 a month?!?! Are they NUTS?!?!

you can't leech off of other people's networks because you can't bring any routers or switches or hubs of any kind to mcgill. They say you can't have networks behind networks. bull!@#

McGill NCS has free wireless acceses in all dorms if oyu sign up, but if they are going to filter out subscribers from non subscribers, a simple WEP network password isn't going to cut it, because people could just tell eachother the pass. GEEK ALERT*** what i think they're going to do is use MAC addresses so that they can let only certain devices connect to the wireless. So when you sign up, they come to your room and set up your wireless setting for you and note what MAC you have.

I am definitely NOT using the libraries all the time, there wouldn't be a point for me to bring my desktop to school then.

even when you do get their internet, the mcgill NCS seems to have tons of down time for no reason. the first one coming up is something like sept 17.

They say that they will filter stuff so that schoolwork will be the first priority in using bandwidth. If you use the network to download music, share files, or play games, they say that they will cut down on your bandwidth because it is less important.

so.... double the price of my ISP here, and half the reliability and performace. Kool....

Oh, JHhilly, make your parents pay for it. Persuade them like you've never persuaded before. Mow the lawn, do the dishes, tell your Mom you appreciate her. you MUST HAVE INTERNET!

I leeched off my neighbours network for one whole semester.... you can bring wireless routers into your rez. In reality, no ones is really gonna care. But you can't do it according to mike.

I'm bringing up my router and wireless access point...I'm gonna try and split the costs with some of my wing-mates...We'll see how it goes.

well, I've never been to mcgill, so all i have to go on is the stuff that they have posted on the ncs website, so if you guys say that nobody cares, then that's awesome news. I brought my router just in case anyways.

there is wireless interenet access now, and it is free

right, but it's only free until sept. 1st i think. fortunately my roommate has internet access, so i'll just borrow her computer a lot.

Hello drmambo, are you living on the third floor (McConnell)? PM me as I am interested in sharing the wireless network with you.
