necessity oof APs

is it necessary to give APs to be considered for harvard? m an international student and my school doesn't offer any AP classes. I have got a 2400 in sat, 800 each in SATII maths level 2,, biologyE and world history and i intend major in economics. what r my chances at yale and MIT????????? plzzzzzzz help.

You have a perfect 2400 on the SAT? And 800 on all of your SATII tests? Really?

Your chances at Yale or MIT are the same as anyone else who applies. 95% are not accepted! and 5% are accepted.

If your school doesn’t offer AP courses, then you clearly can’t take them.

that’s true, i have got them really. but i know they make no difference to my application. any suggestions on how to enhance my chances at HYP/MIT???

Your chances at Yale and MIT are the same as any other applicant.

Do you have anything in your application that will set you apart from the many international students who apply there? Things like research, some well done EC that relates to your application? If you are coming from an underrepresented African country, your chances are much better than if you are from India, or most anywhere in Asia.

These schools are both need blind and provide need based aid for international students. But still, can your parents pay anything? And most of these generous schools expect a student contribution as well…can be several thousand dollars a year.

You do not GIVE APs. You take them. And this is how it works:

Concentrate on presenting your HS grades in the proper format, seek LOR written in decent English without flowery comments, and seek plenty of competent help for your essays by hiring an American specialist.

You have the scores and it is up to you to present yourself in a better light.

The quality of the writing in your posts doesn’t seem consistent with the scores you report.

Yale and MIT? What happened to Harvard and being a Rhodes Scholar?

mathyone, if this is how u doubt my credentials then, m really sorry for not being able to provide the evidence for the same.
coming back to english, even INDIANS speak, write and understand all sorts of english spoken all over the world.
there is no need to hire an American specialist.

thumper1, once again I would like to repeat that m just trying to explore all the opportunities available around me.

I AM PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN.

any comments after the knowledge of my country of citizenship.

plsss help, m really in need of it.

You asked for help. It’s up to you to accept it or throw tantrums. You won’t be the first Indian who writes about not understanding how one can be accepted at IIT and not at a middling college in the US. You might think your English is fine, but you surely do NOT show it. Again, the same will probably be true for your essays and LOR from your professors.

But you know better!

m sorry perhaps u got me wrong or may be i misunderstood u XIGGI. m very sorry if i have hurt u by my words but i thought that ur previous post was a direct offence to my country. so, it’s better if u kindly make me understand what u wanna say and then, i’ll try my level best to clarify my point. VERY SORRY ONCE AGAIN. ur suggestion shall be of good help to me.

xiggi, how do u know about IITs? r u also an Indian?

I am not Indian, but many students from India have posted here. Many of us here have learned how competitive admission at the IIT is. American colleges are way different in the way they admit students. Some of us here have read essays written by Indian students, and could see how different styles and construction are. Good essays are a challenge for the best American students. I was not kidding about the flowery style and other attributes of foreign writing. It has nothing to do with being better or worse.

I encourage you to find a couple of mentors at your targets schools. Mentors who could discuss the idiosyncrasies of international applications.

xiggi, how can i get mentors? u r ryt IITs have resulted in depressions and suicide tendencies in students. these exams r really very tough and perhaps mind boggling. i hope u must have, by now, forgiven me.have u???

Of course! I was not offended at all.

For mentors, look up the internationals in the schools you like. There are HYM forums here and you might want to read the old posts. There might be Indian clubs at the same schools.

Look up the faculty profiles and the graduate students pages. Chances are you will find people willing to help, and students from your part of the world.

Here is an example

Or Harvard’s

Sending a genuine email might work better than posting here.

OP, can you write in proper English please . It’s really hard to read your writing.
