I can't seem to find an easy 1 unit course that I can just stick into my schedule to get the 13 units minimum. Either I find one or I'll just have to take 15 units my first semester which I fear will happen.

does anyone know when demcal starts, I was thinking maybe I could just add one of those

As all of the good freshman seminars are full, and the decals are not up for fall '09, another good alternative would be the CS Self Paced 9[A-H] courses.

If you are interested in politics you should take Political Science 179 (1 unit P/NP). It meets once a week for an hour and has different speakers every week. The lectures are actually webcast so you can listen to them online. I literally only came to 2 lectures the whole semester and passed the class. There is a final at the end with about 40 true and false questions about the speakers and you only need a 65% to pass the class. It was also pretty interesting.

No midterm or homework for PS179, just that true/ false final. This class theme for the fall is activism, so expect to be inspired. If you are lazy like me you could just listen to the webcasts the week of the final or bum notes off your friends in the class. That’s how I passed.

No, it doesn’t matter that it’s listed as upper division. Like I said the class is really easy to pass if you at some effort, and the best part is that you get an upper div unit out of it. My advice is to enroll, and drop it if you don’t like it.

there is an IB 1 unit P/NP course where you get to learn about the botanical gardens
It is IB 112L: Horticultural Methods in the Botanical Garden.

also, taking 15 units your first semester is extremely doable and not something you should fear

I’m a sophomore and I took PS179 Spring '09. If you want to hear some old lectures you can go to webcast.berkeley.edu. It’s even on itunesU if you wanted to get them there. I’ve heard that the Fall '08 lectures were pretty amazing because of the proposition debates and the elections. I also heard that Governor Schwarzenegger came in too speak a while back.
