Need a better understanding about UCSD GRANT-IN-AID

Recently UCSD FA office had issued out the money.
Then I realize I only have $862 (and paid to date $287) for UCSD GRANT-IN-AID.
I am wondering how is this aid offered? Is this based on GPA? Or on Majors?
I have a friend who recieved Paid to Date $4k+ on this (I suppose total of $10k+, while I only have <$300

Right now I still have quite a lot of balance that I need to pay....this is really frustrating. Plus my mom passed away this summer...with a huge medical bills...what a life( guys, do express your love to your parents when you still can)

^^^ This made me want to cry. I am so sorry for your loss. God Bless and know that your mom will always be with you in your heart.

UC financial aid is based on a set of formulas; there should not be any surprises.
UC used to have a systemwide aid estimator but I think each campus now hosts its own. They’re basically the same thing. Just google “UC aid estimator”.
You should file a petition for change in financial circumstances asap with the financial aid office. If the original family income in FAFSA is X, tell them that it’s now (X-Y). If (X-Y) is less than about $40k, you’ll essentially get the most out of UC financial aid: $4.5k subsidized loan, $3.5k workstudy, and the rest in grants(free money).
Hope you’re not too late in filing the petition because the pool of grant money may have dried up.
Good luck.
