Hi there. I have a quick question! I took calc BC last year as a senior in high school and did not take the AP test. I know that some med schools recommend/require a year of calc. During the summer, I took calc over the summer through a cc to get ahead and plan on taking calc 2 through the same cc to save money (and, thus, allowing me to pass the 19 quarter hour limit...I will have 19 hours next quarter already). Would this look bad to med schools? I am not doing this to get an easy grade, but because if I don't I would have to wait until sophomore year to take calc..... Any thoughts? Thanks!

It’s most likely fine. Just don’t take things such as ochem at a CC. You never use calculus in med school anyways.

thanks, rainbowbrite. That was what I was thinking.
Any other thoughts? I WILL be taking stats 1 and 2 and linear algebra at least at my home school. I may throw in diff eqs and calc 3 later…Oh and the calc 1 and 2 I am taking are online through my cc, If that makes a difference

By home school are you referring to the local community college? Stats isn’t even a requirement (although it should be, but that’s my own opinion), and neither is differential equations, so they really won’t care about it.

The fact that they are online probably isn’t an issue either. They’ll be too busy looking at your overall BPCM gpa and your MCATs and your ECs to really care that you took a few math classes at a cc.

no, by home school I am referring to my actual private university

Oh then there’s no problem at all then. Not that there would be any even if you did take those classes at a cc. Just work hard and dont mess up your gpa, and you’ll be golden :).

Thanks for the help rainbowbrite!
Any other thoughts?

That’s not entirely true. There are a few MS’s which require stats (especially Texas and California) and many that recommend it.

Kdog044- Thanks for the info!! That was VERY helpful :)

Only if you are a math major, or just love-love math. Med schools won’t care as long as you take the equivalent of Calc 1 and Stats 1. Only 1/2 med schools even require Calc 2. OTOH, advanced math might help for PhD-MD programs.

I’m kind of in the same boat. I’m taking calc 1 and 2 at a local private school. I received an A in clac 1 and currently working on calc 2 but will taking both of these classes during the same summer negatively affect me?

By private school, I assume you mean private college. If that’s the case, then no, there’ll be no negative consequences.

Okay yes I meant that.
