Need a bit of help with class enrollment?

I'm a UCI transfer, and I'm a PsyBeh major.

So I have class every weekday (MWF, I have 8am-850am; TuTh, I have 11am-150pm). I made my schedule this way because I was planning to live on-campus, but it turns out I couldn't afford it, so I'm commuting from Temecula every single day.

Obviously, trying to get to UCI at 8am on a MWF morning then leaving at 9am is a major hassle.

So I'm trying to drop my MWF class and get another class on TuTh, so I can just commute two days of the week, even if I'm there all day.

On my "graduation plan" for my major, it recommends an elective next quarter, so I'm trying to just get my elective this quarter and switching my MWF class to next quarter in place of the elective (it's offered every quarter from what I can tell).

I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with a couple of questions.

1) My MWF is a school requirement (PsyBeh 11B). Would it be okay to postpone it to next quarter? I already took PsyBeh 11A and 11C at my community college before transferring.

2) Can my elective be from any major? I found a class in the dance department (that doesn't say it's restricted to dance majors) that would work with my schedule, but I'm just a little nervous about taking a class from a completely unrelated major. Are there certain majors that I'm allowed to take my elective in, or can it be anything I choose as long as it's 4 units?

Any help would be appreciated.

I was a Berkeley transfer, not UCI.

1) Make sure it won’t put you behind schedule. Is the class a pre-req for anything else? Do you need it to declare a major? If it isn’t, I don’t see any reason why you can’t put it off.

2) Uh, I would aim for classes that will help you. Prioritize things in your major, or ones that satisfy GE requirements. Make a 2 year plan, figure out all your degree requirements (GE, school requirements, major requirements), and mock up a schedule for the next couple years. Does everything fit? How much wiggle room do you have? How many electives will you have room for? I’m not recommending you stick to that plan for the rest of your college experience, but use it to get an idea of where you stand, and what requirements you still need. If you’ve got plenty of room for freedom and you don’t need all 6 quarters packed full of requirements, sure, take whatever classes you’d like, so long as you’ve met any pre-reqs/restrictions.

On one of those days when you are on campus, wouldn’t be a bad idea to stop in and talk with a UCI counselor in the Undergraduate Student Affairs Office or the advisor in your dept. Perhaps a better source of info, just saying…
