Need a really nice reach school....

Well, i have 1400+ SATs (get back on Monday), 750+ on 3 SAT IIs, amazing essays + recs, have taken the hardest classes in high school, and my interview would be really good. However, my GPA and class rank arent to hot (third decile of class)

Now, my dad said I could apply to anywhere in the country I wanted, but just one, as a super reach.

-I want to major in economics at the reach school
-I want a prestigous school, yet one I have a >1% chance at admittance(I realize I would have <5% chance at most places I am talking about, but I atleast want a small chance)
- Driving distance from Philadelphia
- small enough so that the admissions officers will extesively look over my recs/essays/interview carefully, yet large enough so that I would have a true college experience ~6,000 students
- no an LAC, they just arent nationally known to large coorperations
- within an 8 hour drive from Philadelphia

I am leaning towards Brown or Penn

I think that MIT Harvard, Yale and Princeton are just too high up for me to even have a slim chance

also thinking about dartmouth, sorry

U PENN seems like a nice reach.

with the amount of LAC lovers on this board, be prepared to defend yourself for this comment. i completely agree with it but you will be attacked!! lol

LACs are perfect for someone who wants to go to med school or someone who wants to go to law school, or a scientist or liberal arts major, just not for someone who wants to go into business

My dad (who is the type of person who would hire me in 4 years) has never heard of Swarthmore or Haverford, and both are under 2 hours away.

I just defended my point

You're totally misinformed where LACs are concerned. Even at a super competitive high school, third decile probably won't swing an ivy unless you have some nationally ranked EC. Schools like CMU you may have a shot at.

Apply to more thqn one. If you pay for the application, why would dad care? Pick your favorite of Brown, Penn and Dartmouth, then also apply to Cornell which is a bit easier to get into.

Your dad has never heard of Swarthmore or Haverford, which are only two hours away. Note that this says more about your dad than it does about Swarthmore or Haverford.

Make sure you take a logic class in college. The data you cite do not lead to the conclusion that LACs are unknown to large corporations.

As for a reach school, I'm with the poster that recommended CMU. Dartmouth might also be worth a shot.

Most of his co-workers, all in middle management of a fortune 500 company, have never heard of most liberal arts schools

Go to the business board and tll them an LAC is a good prep to go into business

You'll get laughed at

I get it now, you've set your sights on middle management at a large company. You won't find many who aspire to that at ivies. People hiring for the best jobs in the Country know Swat, really.

Good possibilities would be Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, U Penn, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Brown, Harvard. Harvard, Princeton, Yale might be unrealistic reaches, however.

Duke would be a great school-fantastic education and great alumni network. For more realistic schools -Holy Cross, Colgate and William & MARY.

I have realistic schools I am happy with (Delaware, Northeastern, Rutgers, TCNJ(slight reach), JMU, virginia tech). This thread is asking for a reach school

Would Penn discriminate against me because I am like 5 minutes away?

What's your defenition of a reach school? It sounds like it's a school where you don't have a chance. Why bother?

I'm with suze...I don't understand why you want to apply to a school where you have a <1% chance of getting in. Don't waste your application money.
