Need Advice ASAP!

Here are my stats. I am leaving for Thailand the 30th of this month. In order to re-take the ACT it would cost me about 500 dollars. Is it worth retaking the ACT? Will it make a difference? I have to sign up by tonight so let me know!

Schools of interest: Georgetown, Columbia, Brown, Cornell, NYU, BC

My high school GPA is a weighted 4.0 while taking 6 AP classes. My SAT is a 1980 (Math 720 Writing 680 Reading 580), SAT II BIO 790 and SAT II MATH 720. My ACT score is a 29. Applying as an incoming Junior.

3.75 at UCSB in a double major of Business Economics with emphasis in Accounting and Political Science.

Applying for Political Science or Goverment when transferring
-Internships with Deloitte, Wells Fargo and Wachovia.
-Researcher for a NSF 5 year project emphasized on the internets impact of social movements and political protests.

Head of University Misconduct in the Office of the Student Advocate. Those not familiar with this department, it helps students defend their cases when charged with violations i.e. cheating. It also helps mediate any situation that a student may have encountered with authorities at UCSB.
-Part of a Political Science research team focused on the impacts of Facebook when it comes to political knowledge v political participation.
-There are plenty of other things I have done, but these are the main ones.

In my opinion, I would definitely not spend that much money to retake the ACT based on the simple fact that colleges and universities do not put much emphasis on them for transfer applicants.

They don’t? I hear they mainly care about that, grades, and ec’s. But thanks for the opinion! I’m leaning that way, I’m just worried.

No. I wouldn’t retake. As a Junior transfer the committee is going to be focused on what you have achieved at college. Your solid GPA, your aggressive selection of college courses to fulfill a double-major and your great ECs are what will speak volumes to the committees. I frankly doubt they will give your AP more than a glance at that point.

Nail your essays - make sure they highlight one of these EC experiences.

In other words, it sounds like you have done all the right things while you have been at college, you just need to package them into a compelling snapshot of who you are (which sounds bright, motivated, and passionately active in related ECs). Good luck!

K thanks for the opinion. What do u think my shots are at those schools?

Any other opinions?

I am not as familiar with east coast schools but I think if you put together strong essays that at least one of those schools will offer you admission. If I had to be a betting person, I’d say at least two will. You seem mature and you have a very respectable and competitive transfer GPA. Be proud and good luck!

I dont think it is worth retaking because you have sufficient college background i.e. 2 years and that should over weigh any other admission factor including your ACTs

No need to take the Act over again. You have decent stats and schools will notice your strong background in academics and those internships. Here is what i think of your chances but who knows…
Georgetown-low reach
Columbia-reach
Brown-reach
Cornell-high match
NYU- possible match
BC-in

I would depend on your financial situation. Some of those schools accept so few transfers that every element of the application being as strong as it can be is essential. For your best shot at top schools, higher scores will of course help.

hmom- i cant take it anymore bc the deadline passed. what do u think my chances are without better scores?
