Need advice for a second bachelor's degree but low gpa

I want to pursue a second bachelor's degree for mechanical engineering at CSUN, but I only have a 2.2 for my last 90 units at UCSD. I've already graduated from there with a BA in Biological anthropology, but I want to pursue a degree for mech. eng. because I've always loved engineering and I feel like I have a better chance at finding a job with a BS in that subject.

I didn't do well during my time in UCSD because of some personal issues. I started out as a bioengineering major, but switched to bioanth during my 3rd year after talking to my counselor and taking a year off. I did pretty well my last year and a quarter there and I'm doing really well now, so I'm hoping I could get back to earning that degree. What are my options? It doesn't even have to be CSUN, any accredited university is fine with me.

I was thinking of going to community college first and taking classes that count towards that major and maybe I could transfer later, but I don't know if those classes count towards the gpa they compute. Any help is very much appreciated.
