Hi! So I'm the president of the literary magazine at my school, but we have a hard time getting people to submit to the magazine.

Do you guys have any ideas of how to get people to submit stuff?

“You’ll be able to write it on your college applications!”

Hey, I’m managing editor (president) of my literary magazine, too!

Does your magazine offer the option to submit anonymously? We added that option two years ago and saw a massive spike in submissions (we still give people the option to submit named works, too).

How is your magazine viewed? There was a stereotype that our magazine was pretentious, and so we did all of this quirky stuff to demolish that. One idea that I really liked was that we put boxes for submissions in the bathrooms at school. Sounds kind of sketchy, but it worked. A lot of people were curious about what the boxes were, and it was also a great way for people to submit without their friends knowing that they did.

A lot of this may be tied to the will to express in your school. We try to foster creativity by hosting season-ly coffee houses, poetry performances, and art and writing contests. Additionally, in the spring we’re establishing a free speech wall, which will be a daylong event where people can go spraypaint/paint/doodle/write/graffiti on one of the bland cinder block walls in our school. Anything to get others excited about SOME form of self-expression.

Hope this helps. :)
