My French godson can do a year at one of these schools as a study abroad and his mother has asked my advice. Any thoughts?

I’m not at all familiar with the schools you’ve listed here, but can I recommend another? My son attends Northwestern University and they not only have a well-regarded graduate program involving Marketing, Kellogg School, but they also offer a undergraduate certificate program that involves Marketing.

Thank you, but his school only has exchange programs with the above mentioned schools. I’m not familiar with them either. I hate to just look at U.S. News & World Report ratings… All things being equal, I imagine it wouldn’t be too bad to spend a year in Hawaii.

I don’t happen to be familiar with the business curricula at any of those schools, although I am a Stanford MBA myself.

I have a couple of suggestions:

Since he won’t actually be getting his eventual degree from any of these schools, name recognition is not all that important. Perhaps he can look online at the course offerings for each school and see who has offerings he would like to take during his time there (if he does this, he should also call to make sure the course is actually being offered during the terms he will be on campus).

Perhaps, for a year abroad, he should choose based on other factors than the strength of the major - perhaps simply based on what city he would like to experience, for example. You are talking about some very different environments and travel opportunities.

Cost factors - not sure how the costs work, but costs of living and travel might vary significantly between, say, Hawaii and Mississipi.

I agree with the above. As a b-school professor, I have to say I don’t even know any of these schools- other than having heard of the first four- and even then, only in general terms. I would choose on the basis of location, cost, course choices, and not worry about the overall calibre of the school since its only for a year abroad (which to me, is more about the overall cultural experience than anything else). Which part of the US would this student like to visit?

He also should have a chat with some students who have participated in this exchange in the past or who are doing it this year. They will have insider information that would be useful in his decision-making.

^^I’m sure they (colleges) are all regionally known. I would pick based on location and any word of mouth from students that have participated in the program in the past couple years.

Based only on location I would eliminate Cal State Fresno. It may be in Ca but it is not in a location that I would say is highly desirable. Fresno is not near San Francisco. Los Angeles or even close to the ocean. It is near Yosemite.

I think that George Mason, even though it is a nice school in a good location, is still more of a commuter school, and for those who do live in dorms, a suitcase school. It might not be the ideal experience for an exchange student to have everyone take off on weekends.

My D is a freshman at Coastal Carolina. She is a musical theatre major so I can’t tell you much about the marketing program itself but can share a bit about CCU. The campus is very nice - and the Wall College of Business has really great facilities. Relatively small campus - about 8,500 students with the vast majority being undergraduates. Located in Conway, SC, you are 10 minutes from downtown Conway with it’s small-town feel and 10 minutes from beautiful Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach is VERY touristy during the high season but the kids love it during off season.
