My daughter has a very demanding senior schedule. 4 APs, honors Eng, 20 hour/wk job and lots of community service. She is thinking of dropping Latin II. She took Latin I last year as an elective. She's worried that the AdCom will see only one year of Latin and look disfavorably on her application (even though she has four years of Spanish.) These are her stats:

Unless you have financial problems, or she uses work as a way to relax, that should be the first thing to go. My kids have summer jobs, but once school starts in the fall, that is their job. Then again, money is not an issue for us either. But if she wants latin and likes it, but doesn't have enough time in the day, then quit work.

But as was already mentioned, if Latin isn't her thing, then dump it. Electives are just that; elective. Counselors and AdCom know that. (Unless you want pre-med or law, NO ONE majors in latin). She could have just as easily taken a Computer class or Auto Mechanic as an elective. They will see and concentrate on the core classes.

Thanks for the advice. She likes Latin and the teacher even said he'd personalize the class to make it less taxing for her. But work is important to her. We don't especially have financial problems, but she takes her responsibilities seriously and is proud that she earns her own money. She has work hours on Saturdays and Sundays, so it's not every day after school. Dropping the elective would make things manageable. So that's what she'll do!
