I can live on campus and pay ~13k a year or live at home for free. my parents wont cover the cost of the dorm only the cost of tuition. Even if i work throughout the whole year I will barely scrape 13k, plus interest, plus i need money for myself, etc.

My house is like 5-7 blocks down from campus. I have a car so its about 5-10 minutes depending on traffic lights. But living at home I feel like I would miss out on the whole college experience. Living on campus is a little more convenient but is it really worth 13g's a year?

I've talked to my a bunch of different people and im getting a lot of mixed opinions. I feel that the more opinions I get the more confident I will feel with making my decision.

I dunno, you can always pay back the loans, but you can't go back and recreate your college experience, no matter how much $$$ you have to spend.

astrina, thats an excellent way to put it.

if i live on campus the first year i would probably get an apartment off campus with the friends i make before moving back home. the added freedom would be too addicting

How about ask your parents to rent out your room to another UCSD student who wants to live outside the campus? My friend rents out two extra rooms to De Anza College students in Cupertina CA and receives $1300 every month.

I know living in the dorm is very important to a freshman. Good luck!

why would someone move near de anza? its just a cc...arent the chances of getting into a uc from a cc the same for any cc's? i undertstand that de anza is one of the better cc's, but still i wouldnt move there...

well first of all, i don't know if prices went up or not but i only pay 9700 for housing and i'm in a single. you get a triple and you only pay 8200. that includes a meal plan so you don't really need that much extra money to spend if you know how to budget. these are the prices for this year so yeah. but between 9700 and 13000 is a big difference... i don't think it would jump that much in one year.

oh and warren dorms are great so it would be worth it. =]
i say live in the dorms first year.

plus for the next years you can always apply to be an RA, which gets you "free" housing. i say "free" because they emphasize the fact that it's not really free and that it's just a compensation for your RA work.

parents arent down with renting out my room.

aditami: im probably gonna get a single in warren. 9700 is a lot better than 13k of course, thats without parking, health insurance, etc correct? what does that 9700 include, just the housing + meal plan?

Housing includes: 24/7 high speed internet and premium cable with two HBO channels, MTV, housekeeping, utilities, trash and recycling services, on-site laundry, security services, and countless of activities to provide much-needed study break.

Got information from a housing brochure from UCSD.
;D

You may start to work now to Sep and save $ for the first year of housing. To be a tutor. Some parents are willing to pay $20 per hour.

The Residential Housing program includes 2100 Dining Dollars, which allows the average diner to spend approximately 63 Dining Dollars per week in Dining Services restaurants. Adding to your UCSD Dining Services Dining Plan

i already have a job during the school year and will be working full time over the summer at a ucsd camp so i'll be earning $.

i think im gonna live on campus the first year, thanks for the advice everyone gave me. all i have left to see is the inside of the warren dorms on admit day and unless its completely repulsive im pretty much set.

if you already have health insurance thru your parents you can fill out this form and save about 800 dollars a year

but anyways
i think living on campus for the first year would be really good for the college experience.... thats the time where everyone is new and ready to make friends...you'll meet so many people and its something you have to experience

how about getting a triple/rate saver to save on money?
and you can work somewhere on campus ( the average min pay around campus is about $9.50 or 10 )

but i know how hard it is to change your parents mind =/

hmm i shall brainstorm and come back with ideas! lol

my parents are fine with the idea of me living there, they just say i have to cover the costs.

i already have a job hooked up on campus. im going to be working at the rec desk signing people up for rec classes and answering questions and stuff. i also have a job at the hospital right by warren that ive been working at for 2.5 years.

i'll be working and earning money all year as long as the course load isent extremely heavy.
