First, why are there 6403052 forum categories on this website…
Anyways, im new to college confidential usually im just a lurker but need advice asap preferably from someone with experience on SAT writing/timing with early decision applications !!!
I’m currently in a state where I need to farm this off to someone…
Background:
Top school choices: yale, john hopkins (applying to many more obviously but these two are the only top tier schools I really want/dream of)
Grade: 11/junior
Location: canada
Grades: 4.0 GPA from start of highschool till now, rank 1 out of a class of 272 in my grade, ap courses blah blah whatever (great academics etc)
EC: powerlifter qualified for nationals next year and possibly team canada, work 20-25 hours a week, volunteer (redundant list of volunteer experiences, everyones seen it all anyways)
I just took my SAT may 2nd (days ago) and felt like I absolutely bombed it! I woke up the day before the SATs and i felt really sick and ended up taking the test sick on 4 hours of sleep. I was hoping for 2250+ and probs ended up between 1800-2100
Anyways, my biology teacher has a personal vendetta and I have a low grade in his class 92% which makes me feel like these schools will doubt me especially because I want to be a surgeon and biology is important… This may just be me jumping to conclusions but I’m freaking out…
I want to apply to Yale early decision and I certainly need to retake the SAT after that sitting… and now I’ve decided to take the following sat 2’s: biology e and or m, math level 2, world history. Anyways my problem is I need advice on how to string all these SATS together in the most efficient, effective way possible for Yale’s early decision should I take the june 6th SAT? I feel like I wouldnt have enough time to study it and it could be a waste of an attempt. Must you have all of your SAT’s done for the early decision at Yale? There is the july one soon, october, november, december. I wanted to take the SAT two or three times… im not really sure if any of this makes sense but if someone could recommend their ideas??? Also would it be favorable to take both biology sats
Anyways any ideas or advice what so ever will help! random question: my uncle went to princeton, am I a legacy? (pretty sure it’s a no)
Okay, first, calm down and breathe. It’s not the end of the world that you messed up one SAT and your 92% is perfectly fine.
That being said…if you’re sure that your score is terrible, you may want to consider cancelling it now while you still have time, since Yale does not allow score choice.
Unfortunately, you need to get all of your testing done before the EA deadline, leaving only June, October, and November as SAT test dates. One option could be to take the ACT (I know there’s one in September) instead. If you take the ACT with writing, Yale doesn’t actually require subject scores at all, although some of your other schools might.
If you’re sure you want to continue with SATs, time is a little bit tighter. If you want to have a test date open for retakes, you NEED to either retake the SAT I or take SAT IIs in June. I will warn you that the World History SAT is pretty challenging and detail-oriented. Have you fast-tracked any courses? If you’re taking AP Bio or Advanced Functions, you’re pretty much set for Bio E/M or Math II and can probably go ahead with them in June. If you’re still in Grade 11 Bio, Bio E might be possible depending on how much your course covers. Don’t take both E and M, that’s pointless (and you aren’t allowed to do them on the same day anyway).
So basically, if you want to leave November open for retakes, your options are to take SAT IIs in June and SAT I in October (I recommend this if your courses have covered most of the material on the test since you need to study for final exams anyway, but in this case, I would probably recommend dropping the World History SAT II unless you take a practice test and score very high). The other option is to take the SAT I in June and the SAT IIs in October (if your poor performance on the May SAT I was primarily due to being sick etc. and not being underprepared, I would recommend this option). If the ACT works better for you, you can take that in September and take SAT IIs in June OR October.
Wow that was incredibly helpful!! Thank you so much this actually helped me to see more clearly haha. Only a couple of questions but first- i think the best thing would be to take the subject tests in june because our bio at our school goes way over board and i took a practice sat 2 for it today and it was pretty easy. I got a 97 in math 11 precalc but i have a kaplan book for it so i should be fine although i must say it looked pretty hard given the time limit but the curve is big plus its june so… In this case ill take the sat 1 in october and november. However ill also take the act in september just for the extra opportunity to do well for back up i guess. Anyways the question i have now is if i take the november sat 1 will yale see that too??? & is the act in october too? Will yale see the act no matter what? Only other question is would cancelling My may 2 sat score make sense? Will yale care if i end up doing better next time? Cause im pretty certain i sucked but i want to see what i did poorly on. Anyways thanks a ton
In lieu of SAT & SAT2s, you can take ACT, you know… that’s sufficient for Yale’s Early Action (not early Decision) And OMG, please use some punctuation. Your post makes my eyes bleed
Haha okay, i will. I couldnt tell if this was the type of website where spelling matters, but given the nature of the site one would think so. Usually I never spell check on forums. Anyways, I do plan to do the act in the future, thanks!
