Need advice on obtaining CPA

Hello, I graduated in May 2008 with a Bachelors in Marketing, and have been working in sales for the past 2.5 years. I am looking for a more stable career path in a growing field, and am looking to obtain the necessary prerequisites to become a CPA. According to the guidelines of my state (PA), it appears I will 24 Accounting credit hours (I have taken 6 in completing my marketing degree). My current feeling is that I want to take necessary 6 undergrad classes I need to complete an accounting degree. Any advice on if this is the best path, or would an MBA be better? Also, having completed a degree at a certain university, if you want to go back to that school does that involve applying through admissions again? Thanks in advance!!

I won’t be able to help you but I think you should list those courses that you already took that pertain to accounting. It’ll help those who know how to answer your questions, but obviously there are always those certain courses that all accountants need to take. Therefore, list which ones you already took.

As for the admissions question, the best way to find out is just to ask the school directly. The semester is back in session so people will be working.

The course I’ve taken are just the basic Business school required courses, Intro to Accounting and Managerial Accounting. Thanks!

Maybe go back for a MS in Accounting or MPAcc or whatever the degree at your school of choice is titled. I don’t think an MBA has enough accounting courses.

You really need to go get a MACC to be able to cover that many accounting courses. You could potentially do a certificate program if you just need to get the classes. LSU offers a very good certificate program in accounting that counts for 15 credits. You could always do this certificate program and then do one extra accounting course through LSU independent study to get your necessary 18 credits.

[LSU Independent and Distance Learning](http://is.lsu.edu/certificateprog.asp?nid=103&Level=CO&Online=1)

That is the link for the LSU site. I have done classes through them and the best part = SUPER CHEAP. If I remember right it is $262 per class (plus cost of books). So you could take the classes you need for the CPA exam for probably less than $1500.

An MBA in accounting is worthless. Don’t do that route.

Thank you for the information, I really appreciate it. I will do some research on that program.
