Well, I made the big mistake of applying to only one prestigious math program this summer, an was rejected. I've since gotten a part-time summer job, so I'm no longer able to go away to a camp situation. Any thoughts on some of the online study programs offered (like CTY or EPGY) just to supplement my summer? Is it worth doing?

If you have the time, they are.

i like northwestern’s ctd, keystone high, and national university virtual high school since they actually give you credit

Northwestern is good. Did several classes there. The math classes are a bit more of a pain now - - - most involve strict time deadlines (they used to be more flexible and self-paced). You need to have a proctor for the tests, too. A librarian will do.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had looked at the Northwestern ctd website, which does look good; only thing is that I need to complete any course in 3 months, because my courseload during the school year is heavy enough already. To do that compressed program at Northwestern, I would need to devote 4-6 hours a day, which I can’t do. I think I do need some flexibility due to other summer plans as well. Hadn’t heard of Keystone of Virtual high, but will look into them – thanks!!

I’ve always loved CTY, the technology is pretty easy to use and very convenient. All my instructors are top notch, it is pricey however.

ctd$800, keystone $400, cty $1200, some have accelerated summer programs.
how about “princeton review” those kind of prep online courses? Do they help you not only study, but also prep for tests??
thx

Is taking classes on NUVHS a good idea? will it look good to a college if i take courses there (that i couldnt take at my school)

askq: the CTY online math program that I’m thinking about is only 3 months, and so less money – around $ 645. Here’s the list of online courses offered [CTYOnline Course List & Schedules](http://cty.jhu.edu/ctyonline/courses.html)

What level of CTY math are you interested in? My S is just finishing up with Linear Algebra. He need a two month extension (granted, he started WAY too slowly and took the self-paced aspect a bit too literally and under estimated the step up from AP Calc BC.) Be forewarned: Their tests are VERY long, as CTY prefers that additional learning goes on during the test taking.

Nevertheless, my S is surviving it with an A and will likely take their Multivariable Calculus class in the fall of his senior year. We’re rather go the next to low cost option and take the same class at a community college but the logistics of doing so was more than we could bear.

to patagonia
I’m talking about AP course. it depends on courses.

to FindAPlace
Do you know how CTY gives exams? any proctors?
I think the quality of online courses varies a lot (so we can not just look at $$$), So do the community colleges.

My question, anyone?

to Asron100
as i said., do you know the the quality of online courses in NUVHS? if it is a AP course, how many % of students pass the AP exam? I heard of some online courses just sell you a book, it’s hard to find the teacher. sorry, I don’t know NUVHS.

Askq: I’m taking AP BC Calc at school right now, so I was looking for something academic to supplement my summer, since I didn’t get into the summer math program that I applied to. The CTY course that I’m looking at about isn’t meant to be 9 months – only 3 and requires about 4-5 hour commitment for 11 weeks, so not too much.

Art of problem solving also offers online math courses for much less $$$ .

Aaron: what is NUVHS?

that answers my question i guess…

is taking classes at CTY look good to colleges… cause i want to, just wondering if I would get any recognition out of it… and I dont mean math per say

Yah, I don’t know the answer to that. In my case, I’ve already done some CTY summers, so not sure online course will add to trasncript for college. I’m doing it more because I want to learn the material.

askq- sorry i didnt see your post to me until just now, ill take that advice

patagonia- yeah, thats why i want to do it, but i need to prioritize my time, however, i was wanting to take a language (Arabic maybe) for the fun of it, and i think it would look good to have taken 2 languages

If you don’t care for credit, MIT OpenCourseWare is free and definitely self-paced. There are introductory calculus and science courses.

Oh neat… that could help me learn some calc before next year…
