Need advice on which subject tests to take

Year: Junior
Intended Major: Finance/Economics

Have taken
Chem- 650 (not sending unless I have to)
Math 1- 720

Considering taking
Math 2
US history
Physics

Additional Questions

  • Does it look bad if I take both math 1 and math 2?
-If I do take physics test, should I do in June after honors physics or in December of senior year while taking AP Physics?

Possible Colleges (if this makes a diff)

  • Georgetown (requires 3)
  • NYU
    -Villanova
  • Wake Forest
  • High Point
  • CUNY Baruch
  • SUNY Binghamton

If you took Math 1 earlier and now feel you are ready for Math 2, it makes sense to take it-but you would not send both to colleges. As for Physics, probably depends upon how confident you feel in June and how thorough your class was.

Math1 is essentially useless unless you MUST take a math subject. If you’ve taken Precalculus, take Math2. Then, add US History. For Georgetown, a foreign language is always a good one. Have you reached level 3 or 4 in a foreign language (necessary in any case considering the caliber colleges you’re aiming for)?

@MYOS1634 yeah, I’m in Spanish 4 honors now, I’m taking AP next year, should I wait until December?

The cool thing is that you can take the Spanish subject test this Spring and not have anything else to prepare. If you don’t do well, you can easily retake it in December or at any other point.
(The SAT subject language test is cued to Elemenary/Elementary with a couple HighIntermediate-Low, whereas AP is cued to Intermediate Low/Intermediate with a couple Intermediate-High questions. In terms of the CEF rather than ACTFL scale, we’re talking SAT Subject= A2, AP =B1. So you can take the Spanish subject test this year.)

@MYOS1634 I can’t decide whether to take Spanish or Physics… I’m going to be a business major and will definitely do at least a little better on physics then Spanish. Given this, what would be my best plan to get into Georgetown’s business school?

Some colleges will provide guidance on what Subject tests you should take - MIT or CalTech for example but this is not that common. If you plan on applying for engineering than Math (either one) and a Subject like Physics or Chemistry and English would be good. The score distribution for Math 1 is quite a bit lower than Math 2 for some reason. If you are a native speaker the temptation would be to take a Subject test in this language but all it would prove is that you are a native speaker, it would not speak to what you’ve learned in HS. It is best to take the Subject tests after you have completed the related AP or IB in the spring

For finance/economics, Math2, US History, and Spanish would be the best choices. However, you could take USHistory, Physics, and Spanish this May or June, and take Math2 in the Fall (October or November)? Math2 is offered every session, Spanish every session except November (it’s offered with a listening comprehension component.)

Note1: you will not be required to take Physics in college, although if you like it you can of course take it for your science requirement. You’ll have a lot of choices for your science requirement - they depend on the college you attend. My favorite was “Chemistry of cooking”. Fun AND filled with lots of learning. Nowadays, Intro to Computer Science is a popular one. Astronomy is another one many students enjoy.

Note2: if you’re a Spanish heritage speaker, the language test wouldn’t be as useful but would still be used by Georgetown as your 3rd and would still get you out of some classes at most colleges. In fact the SAT Subject language test is the only subject test that functions like an AP in that respect! (you’ll have a college graduation foreign language requirement, which you can meet with Spanish or by taking another foreign language).
