Hello Everyone,

Our family is new to the college process, but so far we have been hanging in there and getting things done on time!

Our daughter has applied to seven lacs. She has been accepted to three so far. Those
Three have also sent merit scholarship information. Our question is this: should our daughter apply for additional scholarships at each of the schools she is accepted to? That could possibly be seven. Our thought is that she could apply for scholarships at each one, then that may help her choose in the spring (money is a big consideration).

If she gets extra money at each school, what happens to that money at the six schools she doesn't go to? If she gets extra scholarship money, does that obligate her in any way?

Hope this makes sense, because we could use some advice here!

She should absolutely apply for merit aid at each of the seven schools!

And, no, getting a merit award does not obligate her in any way. If she turns it down, the money will go to someone else.

If money is a big consideration, have you made sure that your daughter applies to at least one school that you know will be affordable, either because of a low cost of attendance or because of a guaranteed merit award that you know she qualifies for?

By “guaranteed awards,” I am referring to those schools that offer automatic awards to students with GPA & SAT/ACT scores above a certain level. For more information, you can look at these two threads:

She shouldn’t worry…apply to all…no obligation.

Schools tend to do one of the following…

1) “over-award” the number of scholarships because computer models have predicted how many students will actually accept.

2) re-award scholarships that are declined by students.

Either way…your D is “in the clear” and should apply and not worry.

Thank you for your replies.

Yes, at the three she has been accepted to so far, they all three offered merit money with their acceptance. And now those three have suggested she apply for extra scholarships they have available.

So now she needs to get back to work!

Thanks again
