Questions – Do I need to aim a little lower? Which 7 extracurricular activities should I put on the common app? If I send in a complete list of my extracurriculars will college admissions officers look at it?

I want to major in some type of science, maybe biomedical engineering

EC: Here’s where I need some advice…if the common app only has room for 7, which ones should I put??? I'm also afraid of the fact that a lot of my activities are only junior-senior year which is just because i didn't know about them before..

Stock Exchange Club (10, 11, 12) – Founder, President…is a community organization not an official school club because our school has no money.
National Honor Society (11, 12) – Head of Public Relations
Marching Band (9, 10, 11, 12)
Varsity Swimming (9, 10, 11, 12) – varsity letters each year

science/ math – I’ve gotten more and more interested in these as the years have gone by. these really don’t have much leadership possible but I’m pushing for captains next year on the science Olympiad team and if the coach decides to have them, I’ll definitely be one

Science Olympiad (9, 10, 11, 12) - medals at regional and state competitions including a first and second at states this year
NJ Science League - 10 (chem II), 12 (Physics II) – missed 11th grade because of conflicts..
Science Bowl (11, 12) – maybe captain this year?
Math League (11, 12)
Astronomy Club (11, 12) – Founder/President…is a community organization not an official school club because our school has no money.
Columbia Science Honors Program (12)
** brought the USABO and USNCO competitions to my school by going to administration and going through that whole process (didn’t compete in USNCO because of a conflict, 1 point away from advancing in USABO  )

Volunteer-
I volunteer at the local hospital (I have like 50 hours though so I’m sure this doesn’t mean anything..)

Summers

9-10 – CTY
10-11 – CTY Distance Learning: AP Calculus, Biology Honors
***11-12 – New Jersey Governor’s School in the Sciences (will be continuing research started here over winter break)

Essays and recommendations will be great hopefully
Thanks in advance, please be brutal :)

well, like you i'm a senior in highschool, but from your stats you'll def. get into rutgers. the others you've got a pretty good shot at imo.

Heck no, you're not aiming too high. If you'd be happy to go to Rutgers in the worst case scenario, this list is good.

send in an activities resume.

upload it in the "Additional Information" section on the common app.

i think you're college list is great because you have a good mix of schools. if anything, cut out the schools you don't see yourself going to. it might save you some time with essays and a little bit of $. good luck.

thanks for the input :)
anyone have any ideas on what 7 activities I should put on the common app?
how will admissions officers look at the fact that a lot of my activities in math/science were only grades 11-12..should i add in the explanation somewhere that it's only because as my interest in science grew, i added on more activities in that area each year?

also I need to add the following:

Relay For Life (10, 11, 12) - Team Captain

Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Leadership (uhh random award...don't really know if it's significant)

there is someone in my school with pretty much the same stats. u've got competition my friend.

lol that's cool

anyone else?? please help me! haha

Aiming a little high. good luck

this kid should be aiming high with his stats and resume. lmao.

aiming too high? or not?
anyone have any specific comments?

anyone?

thanks :)

bumppppppppppppppp

if you're happy with rutgers, you aren't aiming too high. just make sure that you wouldn't be heartbroken if you were given no choice but to attend.

do you think i have a shot at the other schools though? no? ahh can someone give me legit chances at each school???

you certainly have a shot at the others - your stats are competitive at the ivies and hopkins, and i think that nyu, michigan, and cmu are definitely matches for you, maybe even low matches in the case of nyu and cmu. umd and rutgers are your obvious safeties...you'd have to commit homocide between now and january to be denied.

thanks :)
anyone have any comments on my extracurricular activities??? those are what i'm most concerned about!

wut school u from?
im from the same school as you

No MIT or Stanford? :) Both are pretty good at biomed eng.. I think.

No JHU is the best for biomed eng. I think you have legit chances at all of them (and in at rutgers). The seven activities you should put are the seven you are most passionate about.

In what dimension does this qualify as a rough year?

RE: Which ECs to put on the Common App - Put the ones which you care about the most and which define you the most as a person. The ECs will mean a bit more if it looks like you really cared about them as opposed to just wanting more padding for the application. If you couldn't remember the EC when you were first compiling your list (e.g. Relay for Life) then you can probably safely omit it. Schools like HYP and the others don't care about all of your ECs if they're just a meaningless shopping list.
