Need Advice: Submit AP Econ Scores or Take "Principles" Courses

Just received a call from D, and I said I'd post a quick message to see if any other NYU students have input.

D just met with her counselor today regarding changing her major to Econ (CAS) and minoring in business. Counselor advised her to submit her AP scores for micro & macro economics and head straight into the intermediate level courses. Earlier in the year she thought she'd begin with the principles courses (not submitting AP scores) and counselor agreed.

Although she had high AP scores (both 5's, I think), it's been more than a year now since she's taken econ. How tough is it to begin at the intermediate level? She wants to make sure she has a solid foundation in the subject so that she is successful throughout her studies, but counselor is pushing for availability of electives.

Advice from anyone who's taken econ?

I took both the introductory Macro and Micro courses in the econ dept. They are really easy and require no math beyond basic arithmetic. I never took AP Micro, but Macro at NYU was like a repeat of AP Macro.

I would tell her to just take the intermediate level courses which require calculus, I believe. It would especially make sense if she’s planning to get a BS in Econ in the theory-track. A BA on the policy-track is significantly easier here.

Thank you. :-)
