Need advice!

What is the best freshman dorm for someone who does not want to party, but wants to make good friends and have a social life?(I am a business major)

Probably the red brick for your major, Tenaya. You should be able to find a decent amount of people who aren’t super into partying, but aren’t complete shut ins either. They’ve turned Sierra Madre and Yosemite into themed dorms this year. I’m not sure how that’s going, but some themes may attract people who are less into partying. Cerro might be ok for you, but it’s generally more difficult to meet people.

Thanks! What’s the best way too meet people? And do you know the chances of getting a double??

Yep… Red Bricks for sure.

To meet new people, I would suggest knocking on people’s doors (those near yours and others) during the first week and getting to know them. Also, perhaps during the first few days, leaving your door open so people can come by and introduce.

Osakadad,
So if an ARCE kid requests Sequoia and needs to list backup choices, would you suggest requesting the engineering red brick dorm f/b North Mountain? Would it be ok to request other red bricks as backups even if they house a different major? We need to list 5 options. I got advice from a student here and appreciate input from those who go before us! My son is academic and also wants to jump into getting to know new friends. He’s not a party person. He’d want to play IM sports, explore the area, etc for fun. Thanks so much!

^^The school is excellent in getting kids oriented. By the end of WOW week, he’ll have buddies that he’ll keep for 4 years and longer. Also, he’ll probably already be in a club or two or on an IM team.

I am sure that you can have other red bricks as back ups. There are no “lousy” dorms at Cal Poly and often students will choose dorms with concentrations of other majors on purpose to meet people with other backgrounds. Believe it or not, the red bricks are the most crowded and “rustic” of them all. They are still popular as they force you to interact with others and make friends. Expect 3 to a room.

@osakadad
would bricks be a good option if I wanted to be able to study there too/it’s not too noisy so i can sleep?
In the towers can you describe ace, and choice? Would those be good?

In the red bricks each student has their own bed, wardrobe and desk. It is cramped, but my kid did all his HW in his room. It is not quiet in the red bricks, but no dorm in the World is except on Sunday mornings…

My son is in the red bricks now, Muir, you can choose any dorm regardless of major. In general Cerro Vista is the quietest, but many complain it is hard to meet people. Towers are generally considered to be noisier with many who like to “party”. Red Bricks are friendly, some who like to “party”, and they have two study rooms plus the Lounge. One study room for those working together and a separate study room for absolutely no talking.

My son tends to study in his room, generally you close your door if you want privacy and leave open for company. Between WOW and just hanging out he has made tons of friends and absolutely loves Cal Poly.

Muir is the Math and Science dorm, but there are people of all majors in there, just like the other red bricks. Majority may be from the particular school.

Remember this is a generalization from reading, many in the towers who don’t party love it, just as many who party like the red bricks. You never know for sure year to year. If you are extremely unhappy there is a process to move.

Actually North Mountain are the oldest dorms and are filled primarily with Engineering students. They are larger, but are somewhat like a motel. You can see diagrams of each room type, dimensions, and furniture on the housing website. Basically the furnishings are similar in each dorm.

With regard to the various choices in the towers, many do not get their first choice, but you can join any group. I haven’t heard much about the “themes” really working, but I would think generally you can tell which would draw the rowdier types that many want, and which would draw the more studious types.
