So, I am graduating high school with a few college credits from community college this year. But I want to try to go medical school and I hear that you need to have a 3.8. So, I have like 3-4 Cs in a couple of classes that aren’t science related, but everything else is As and Bs. Should I not transfer my credits and start over? Or should I continue the path and retake the classes so it wouldn’t affect by GPA later?
AMCAS, AACOMAS and TMDSAS all require you to report every college level grade you have ever earned–including dual enrollment grades from high school. All grades must be reported and will be used to compute your GPA even if you don’t transfer your co-enrollment grades to your college.
Grade replacement is not allowed. Both the original grade and retake have to be listed on your application and both will be used to compute your GPA. The consensus is that pre meds shouldn’t retake classes they’ve passed.
Hopefully you will be able to earn earn enough As in college to dilute the effect of your high school grades.
It is best to make sure that your GPA/MCAT scores do fall within the average accepted range of GPA/MCAT scores of students that have gotten into your choice of school. That way you are maximizing your chances and not applying to inappropriate schools.
