I'm planning on applying to columbia as a fall '07 transfer. I know that columbia is need-aware for transfers, but i was wondering if anyone knows exactly how "aware" they truly are. Can applying for financial aid really be the difference between accept/reject?

Columbia is need-blind for transfers. They just have limited financial aid funds for transfer students. I got no financial aid because my dad's salary was very high last year, but I do know of other transfers who received substantial aid.

for some reason, a few members on the transfer board of this site say that although columbia is technically need-blind, asking for aid can still affect your chances (which i guess compeltely dismisses the idea that it IS actually need-blind...)

So you're saying that applying for aid CAN NOT POSSIBLY affect my chances of admission?

Columbia itself says it is need-blind but cannot guarantee 100% coverage of demonstrated financial need. Look it up. A school as rich as Columbia does not reject people on the basis of financial need. I don't understand why people think applying for financial aid hurts you at CU, sounds like people were c0cksure that they'd get in and got rejected. The admissions office and financial aid office are different offices and you do not mail your financial aid forms to the admissions office.

thanks so much layla, i really really appreciate your help
