Hey guys, I'm a rising senior and I'll be applying to colleges in the fall/winter and I was wondering:

Does applying for need based aid have an effect on whether or not you'll be accepted?

Because my need based aid is leaning towards nearly full tuition at a number of schools and I was wondering if that would cause me to be denied if the admissions officers were on the edge about accepting me.

Well, I know one thing: if the college is need-blind, they do not care. However, colleges that are need-aware DO take it into consideration. How much consideration I do not know sorry!

You’d be better off applying to schools that have very generous financial aid or automatic merit scholarships that you know you qualify for. If they accept you and you can’t afford to attend, it will only break your heart to have been accepted but be unable to go there.

That happened to me way back in the day, and also happened to my daughter.

Many schools are need blind, meaning that your financial need won’t influence admissions decisions… but not all schools guarantee that they will meet 100% of demonstrated need, and 100% of demonstrated need isn’t always enough to attend anyways. Basically, you’ll need to consider this on a school-by-school basis, because there’s no general rule.
