need-based aid

I got into U of M LSA back in December, and since then it has been my #1 school (besides Cornell, who wont get back to me until march 31). They sent a financial aid award notice, and I was highly dismayed. I am in a low-income family (about $24k for 4 people, and my FAFSA EFC was $1806). However, Mich's financial aid award was $25,000 with $6600 in loans. This leaves about $17500 unaccounted for (total costs about $42000). There is no possible way for me to make up for a disparity like this. I am Out of State, and i think this may have something to do with it. But essentially, if I'm expected to pay $17,500 plus $6600 in loans a year, that just isn't possible. $17500 is 6500 less than my family makes in a year! So, basically, I think Michigan has given me a big screw you and made it impossible for me to go there. Is this typical? They must realize that someone with that income cannot pay that price. What should I do? Or am I just screwed big time when it comes to Mich?

Btw, I got an award from Case (who matched the FAFSA exactly) and Cornell will definitely do that as they are huge on need-based aid. But, I don't know if I'll get into Cornell ... so, I don't know.

Thanks for any input.

bump..................

what do you want any of us to do?

it's a public university; you're out of state.

yeah, it sucks, but if you really want to attend UMich, you can take out more loans. I think that's pretty much your only option.
