Need based and merit aid.

My daughter is being recruited by Denison athletically.
Our EFC is expected to be $22000
Daughter is expecting to receive 22000 Founders Scholarship.
Our estimated net price is $28,600.
Am I correct in assuming with the merit aid, our cost would be $6,000? Or is there some sort of offset from need aid to merit aid?

Thanks

There is usually an offset of the merit aid to the financial need but it really varies by college. In some cases schools will use the merit to fill the student contribution portion. Call the Denison FA office and ask about their policies.

I doubt that the merit money will go directly to reduce your EFC, but please report back to CC on what the FA people at DU tell you after inquiry.

Was informed by Denison that merit money does not reduce EFC, it merely offsets need based awards.
It seems to me that merit money is primarily for families that do not receive need money.
The office stated that there is really no way that our tuition price will be less than our EFC, regardless of merit awards with the exception of a few full scholarships.

I did learn that outside scholarships first reduce the family’s contribution.
My daughter is enrolled in the class of 2019 :)

Congrats! My S may be joining her at D–waiting for merit aid decision in the spring.

Nice to hear about the outside scholarship application, as S may get $ from W’s employer.
