Okay, I've seen this asked before, but for the life of me can't find it. Will I be at a disadvantage for need-based aid if I send in my enrollment deposit before I get my aid package (ie less "bargaining power"). I really want to attend, but am still hoping that as a independent student with an EFC of $0 financial aid will be atleast decent. With things like orientation being scheduled starting in about 1 month I'd like to go ahead and send my deposit as soon as possible, but don't want to "paint myself into a corner" either.

(Not hoping for too much, but would like to get Pell, M-Pact, work-study, and student loans to equal enough to put U of M within reach).

I just got notified of acceptance yesterday, so I haven't gotten anything yet. I also live without support from family, but in addition have three dependents, and no assets.

I don't think I'll get any scholarships when it comes down to it, because most are targeted at highschoolers coming in as freshmen and I'm a transfer. There is one targeted at non-traditional women, but the deadline for that has passed (I had to be admitted by mid-March).

Your aid was gapped, which is a big concern of mine. I'd take out the full amount in federal loans if I could, but if there is gap we'll be in trouble. Are you in-state or OOS?

I think they have a reputation for being worse on OOS (I guess because they are state funded). I'm fortunate that I am in-state. Hopefully mine won't be too bad.

(Although as of today WA still isn't even updated to saying I've been accepted....maybe the call letting me know I was accepted was a dream...if my sister knew my admissions councelors name I'd be sure it was a cruel joke LOL).
