Need Based Financial Aid

My son is hoping to be accepted by UVA on EA. I just filed his FAFSA and found out that the minimum salary requirements for full federal aid have been lowered and he will not be receiving the federal grant we thought he would be receiving. Does anyone know if all eligible students admitted to UVA are granted need based aid that comes directly from the school? Thank you.

UVa requires submittal of the profile and Fafsa, as you will see on the UVa financial aid website. UVa meets the full documented need of US students - both in-state and out of state. That includes use of federally subsidized loans and work study.

As I understand it, UVa will reduce work study first if you receive third party scholarships, so apply to them. Many of them have early deadlines.

Make sure you meet the deadlines for each college you apply to (some are early) as well as the deadlines of your state’s financial aid program. In many cases, you need to submit for financial aid to a college before you hear if you are accepted. Many colleges give financial aid preference to people who submit before a certain date. Some colleges say that if you are eligible for a state grant, and don’t complete the paperwork on time, they will not make up the difference.

Just be sure to apply to many different colleges so you can compare net costs after need and merit aid - particularly because the application deadlines for many of the colleges with the best need aid have already passed.

He actually did apply to many different schools and he has heard back from all…except for UVA which happens to be his first choice. He actually received nice financial aid packages from all of them, with using the financial information we gave college board and also with scholarships. Right now we are just in the dark with UVA because we have no idea what they will offer as far as any kind of merit based aid and the reduction in the federal aid took us off guard. Thank you for your reply. We just have to wait until 1/31/12.

I’m glad you did all of that work already. Please keep in mind that UVa does not provide merit aid to entering students, except for the privately funded Jefferson Scholarships.

I did not know that. I tried to read as much as I could about every school he applied to but of course trying to keep it all straight is a job in itself. He was actually nominated for a Jefferson Scholarship through his school but he didn’t make it to the interviews. We knew that his extra curriculars weren’t strong enough. Thank you again for the information. It helps to connect all the dots.
