Need-based financial aid

What is need-based. I saw this while filling out the commonapp. Financial aid wont' be a factor in deciding where i want to apply, meaning i'll apply to schools with expensive tuitions but i will still apply for it. So when it says do you intend to apply for need-based financial aid, what do i check?

Need-base assistance is awarded because it is determined that a family needs the money based on income and lack of assets. Merit-based assistance which is given because a person gets good grades and has high test scores. A family’s ability to pay is not factored into merit-based awards. If you intend to apply for need-based financial assistance then you should check yes.

Will you need financial aid to be able to attend? Or will your parents be paying full freight? If you might need aid to attend then you should answer yes. No point getting accepted then not being able to afford to go.

no, i won’t NEED financial aid but it would certainly help b/c of my other siblings’ tuition. So if it’s not a necessity, but i will still apply for it, what should i check?

If you intend to apply for it then check yes.
