I visited Berea when I was in high school. Berea is located in Appalachia. Most of its applicants are from Appalachia, although they also encourage applicants from other areas, such as overseas (the topic of this thread).

It’s program was specifically designed for those in a situation that you describe - very poor but willing to work hard to earn their education.

I found this interesting thread here on CC:

And an article from the New York Times:

One of the requirements to gain admission to Berea College would be to have a low family income, right? How low do you have to get in terms of low income in order to be eligible for admission?

My family income is something about 50k.$.
I’ll be able to cover traveling/living expenses I think.

What am I looking for ? Well, I’m just trying to get out of my country so I’m looking for EVERY school that can help financially, as my family is unable to meet expenses, possibly without loans, or with a small amount of them.

^I’m not sure why you’d want to come to the U.S. to study under those circumstances, given that in general, private and out of state tuition is unbelievably inflated. Canada, for example, offers excellent value in terms of cost to internationals, and many of the major Unis outrank many of the U.S. privates in terms of world-rank. Many European schools are free.
At any rate, please be sure you have a back-up plan because you’ll be playing longshot odds to achieve this goal, just so you’re clear.

Yes a low income is required. They use a formula similar to what the FAFSA uses.
