Need Blind for Internationals

Grace,

Are you still here? I need to clarify some thing. We had some discussion in another thread that UofC is need blind for international or not. I found the following statement on the web site:

[quote]
In our admissions process, we must be “need-sensitive” for international candidates.

Does it imply "need blind"?

Thanks.

I don’t know about the policy personally, but “need-sensitive” is the opposite of “need-blind”.

No, UChicago is not need blind for international applicants.

UChicago is need blind for domestic applicants. It is not for internationals. I don’t think it means that if you are an international and you need aid you are automatically rejected, it just means that needing aid is a factor in accepting internationals, whereas it is not for domestic applicants.

Only 6 U.S. institutions are need blind for internationals. These are Amherst, Dartmouth, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, and Yale.

I know from experience (my kid is in the class of 2016) that UChicago is need-blind for Canadians.
I found it in writing, too, towards the bottom of the page I’m linking to, under Non-required materials, Financial Aid Application. https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/applicants/international#fin-aid-app

@artloversplus yep, still here. We are need-sensitive for international students, meaning that we may take in to account an international student’s request of financial aid in making an admissions decision. @solhari is correct in that we are need-blind for Canadian citizens (as well of course as US citizens/permanent residents). We do, however, guarantee to meet 100% of financial need for admitted international students who apply for aid-- so international students requiring aid who are admitted and apply for aid at the time of admission will still receive a financial aid package that meets all their need.

Thanks, Grace. Time flies, when we first saw you presenting in the O week, you were just graduating. 4 years later… everyone got older.^^^
