Need blind... really?

Colleges say that they are need blind and that they don't see an applicant's financial need, but...

on the common application, on the very first page, on the bottom, is asks,
will you be a candidate for financial aid?

So... are colleges saying that adcoms won't look at the first page that contains like identifying info? or.. are they saying that adcoms will look at it but ignore the answer to that question?

confused..

please enlighten me
thanks!

Well... I don't really now, but I don't think that ALL colleges that use the common application are need blind. So my guess is that the info will be available for ascoms to see, just some (those from need-blind schools) won't use it...

All applications ask whether you're applying for financial aid. They need to notify the financial aid office when you're accepted to let them know, that's the main reason. In theory, need-blind schools won't discriminate against you if you check yes. Is this true? It's hard to know, but people receive financial aid from top schools every year, so it's not as if they will outright reject you.

i see.

so it's not really need blind i guess in that they don't see at all if you need FA or not.

It's that they see if you need it, but ignore it.

okay thanks!

anymore comments?
