need blind

is notre dame need blind in the admissions process?

They state that they are, but honestly, even the most prestigious schools in the country will take a look at how much you need. As someone previously posted on the ND board, they might need to take a few full-paying tuition applicants who might not have made it otherwise in order to give others opportunities.

I don’t think the admissions office cares about that justbumming. They aren’t in charge of financial aid. If they really cared, they wouldn’t admit so many children of employees because they get free tuition, but that is for human resources to worry about, so children of employees actually get a little boost. If admissions were really looking out for the money they would admit fewer children of employees and have HR kick that money back into the Christmas bonus pot.

In any case, ND has enough money to go around. 4% of undergrads get grants of full tuition room and board or more, so they aren’t, provided you can get in.

well my pops heads the yale’s admissions department and I asked this same question and yale has more money than nd so i figure it would be the same all around, if not moreso at ND

Admissions and Financial Aid are completely separate, the records only get linked when sending out financial aid info in acceptance packages from what I have heard. If you don’t get the financial info and don’t speak with financial aid it is pretty hard not to be need blind!

While I believe that ND tries to practice being truly need blind, if I am not mistaken, the application for admission asks for parents’ professions, as well as levels of education and colleges/unis attended. If admissions sees the entire application, which I assume that they would and not just the essay part or the EC part, then it is my opinion that admissions would have a pretty good handle on whether a prospective student will need aid. And, I also do not believe that this holds true to ND in particular, as most admissions apps ask about parent info. Why the apps ask about parent professions and education levels/colleges attended is beyond me-it is after all, the student’s app and the student that will be attending. Therefore, I really wonder about the “need-blind” issue. Perhaps the parent info is separated and sent to the financial aid office before admissions officers see the app? Let’s hope so for the practice of “need-blind” to be true.

Many universities, including Notre Dame, give a boost to first-generation college students, which is one reason for the existence of that question on the application. An applicant’s zip code and high school attended probably reveals more about the family’s ability to pay than any other piece of information on the application.

^ agreed, certain parts of your app implicitly reveal how much you need.
