NEED CHANCING-father doesn't believe I can get in! is he right?

The only reason not to apply to Brown early is if you're going to apply early somewhere else.

well as i was saying earlier hunt, it forfeits my chances for merit scholarships and the w&l johnson scholarship. not to mention my father thinks its a stupid idea

Why would it forfeit anything? You can apply RD at all those schools. If you get into Brown, of course, you'd have to go there. But if Brown rejects or defers you, you will still be an applicant at those other schools.

the scholarship programs require you to apply by a december deadline, which is before Brown ED results come out

I think ED is a very good idea if it is definitely your #1 and the $$$'s are covered. I believe it enhances your chances with solid, but not overwhelming stats.

Look at the program applications to see if they make you say that you haven't applied ED anywhere. I'll bet they don't, and that you can apply for them even if your application to Brown is pending. I suppose it might be painful to win a scholarship and then not be able to take it because you are obligated to go to Brown if you get in. If this is about finances, the situation is completely different, of course.

no, no not a financial situation. According to Brown's ED program I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to send out apps to other places

Unless Brown's ED is different from all others, it simply prohibits you from applying EARLY to other schools, and requires you to go to Brown if accepted there. It will not prohibit you from applying RD to any school. Look at Brown's website for the details, and call the admissions office if it's not clear. Many ED programs will allow you to apply as early as you want to rolling admissions program, for example.

"You may, however, apply to other colleges at any time under their respective Regular Admission programs."--wow thanks Hunt, I was clearly very confused. this helps a lot

So, if you do apply early to Brown early, you may well have to write your RD applications before you hear from Brown, but that's a good idea anyway. You may also be able to placate your dad by pointing out that you will be applying to the schools he wants you to as well, and that you don't have all your eggs in one basket.

any other opinions?

bump bump bump

Show him what ur made off and defy his expectations. my dad was kind of the same thing at the beginning of my high school career, but now, as a HS senior, his opinion had kinda changed. He's now encouraging me to apply to MIT, Caltech, and UofChicago early action, after I had showed him that I had worked hard working in a research lab with a MIT professor after the summer. Before, he thinks I couldn't do MIT or Caltech.
So, if you really want to do Brown, then, apply if your fiances can handle it.
