Need Clarification About SHIP

So I currently have insurance under the California Healthy Families Program, but I have to cancel it soon because my plan only covers services in my county of residence (Santa Clara). Comparing my current insurance w/ SHIP, SHIP seems a lot more expensive. $5 vs $15 co-pay for doctor visits, etc. I am low-income and kind of startled by the price tag. But I guess I have no choice, do I? Anyway...

I've read the SHIP brochure but I still need some clarification. I understand that it's $282 per quarter, $846 total for a whole year, $70.50 per month (?), but I'm confused as to why the spring/summer coverage term is so long compared to the other two even though it costs the same amount of money. Do I still get coverage if, say, I decide to go home and take summer classes at my local CC?

Also, is the SHIP waiver quarterly? Or do you only get to cancel it once a year?

While you pay for SHIP in three quarterly installments – SHIP covers you year-round. It is comprehensive insurance which will cover you worldwide. I do not know the co-pays involved, and of course you still need to use the PPO network. At UCSD, care begins with the UCSD Student Health service including referrals to specialists if necessary. At home, you can see anyone in the PPO network.

As to wthether it is expensive, it depends on what you had before. I have a PPO individual (not employer provided) plan my Mom signed me up for – I pay some $ 120/month. So, for me SHIP is less expensive.

I never had health insurance before, so SHIP will be the first, I didn’t think it was expensive compared to my friends who were up in the 120+ range like Torrey.
