I recently got admitted to UC Davis' design department, and I'm very tempted to go there for graphic design. Has anyone heard about their design program? Also, I hear that they "can't compete" with professional art schools? Does that mean art school graduate will have an edge over me in the job market?

I’m in the same boat as you…sort of. Just SIR’d to Davis recently, actually. To be honest I don’t know much about the program but I looked up some graduates’ works and they seem to be doing alright. I think that we just have to make up for the lack of reputation with our own effort…

oh cool! good to know someone in the same boat as me are you doing visual communication as well? i’m curious where did you find their graduates’ work? i only found some on their department website, which seems to be outdated… and some through google and linkedin…

Well, I pretty much based it on what I found on Google…

Although I’m leaning towards visual communication, I’m kind of curious about exhibition design as well.

At this point I’m really more worried about whether I can graduate on time as opposed to the reputation xD Where did you hear about the graduates being unable to compete with art school graduates though?

i called their advisor. apparently a bachelor of arts has alot less concentration on design than a bachelor of fine arts. i’m a bit worried about job prospects… i’ve done a lot of research on graduates and their websites, seems to me that a few are pretty successful, and most who just graduated are still finding jobs that suit them, or doing freelance work. i also heard from a friend who graduated from SVA and working in a design firm in NYC, that our portfolio is more important than our school.

out of curiosity, what other majors and schools did you apply to? did you apply to CSUs?some of them seem to have pretty sound BFA programs, but that’s too late for me hahah

I applied to UCLA’s DMA as well but I got rejected. My portfolio wasn’t up to par though, I honestly would not have turned that thing in to Art Center, which has a higher admissions rate but probably carries more prestige in terms of name when it comes to the industry. Also applied to the other UC’s that have studio art, but got waitlisted at Irvine, rejected by Cal and switched my major to Linguistics at SC. (Got in but not going) Didn’t complete the portfolio for SB(don’t really want to do book arts anyway) and that’s about it…

I applied to CSULB, rejected. I was accepted to SJSU but couldn’t accept the offer since I ended up dropping Speech which is a requirement. I kind of regret that since they seem to have a pretty solid program. Also applied to SF State but again, the Speech class is a problem. Plus apparently I’m still pending. Not going to wait for that anymore.

I’d probably have to apply late to some art schools at this point since I’m having trouble with Stats and I’d probably get my admission rescinded, lol. (The semester, unfortunately, still isn’t over for me…)

oh… are you sure SJSU won’t let you take speech over summer? or at their school? did you email or phone them to ask?.. i know its a requirement, i took it too. sometimes schools make an exception for you.
as for stats i really dont know… if its a math requirement then it’s probably pretty important…
what art school are you going to apply to? Academy of Art University is the only one i know that still accepts applications, do you know any others?

can i ask your overall stat?
becuase i rly rly want to apply davis’ design apartment and im worried about my stat right now.

I would love to know stats of people that got accepted to Design for this year and what other schools that they were accepted to. I am trying to help some students that are interested in graphic design. Thanks
