Need Credit/Unit advice from UC Davis students/alumni

Hello UC Davis students or alumnus. I have recently been accepted to UC Davis and will be attending in the Fall. I have a few questions and I hope you guys can answer them for me. :)

AP Credit/College Courses:
US History - 3 (on UC Davis’ website it says I get 8 units for 17A and 17B).
Biology - (Likely won’t get any credit because I hope to switch into Biological Sciences).
Statistics - (If I get a 4 or 5, I skip Statistics 13).
Calculus AB - 5 (I get credit for 17A)
Foreign Language - I took 10 units at a State university (Hopefully I skip some GE from that?)
Philosophy 10 (Assist.org says I get 4 units for Philos 1, Intro to Philos).
Philosophy 65 ([Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.Assist.org) states I get 4 units for Philos 14 Eth Soc Prob in Soc).

With those credits, do any attending students know which other GE courses I will have to take, what will be my academic standing, and how do AP credits look on your transcript?

Another question: Will I be able to switch into Biological Sciences after my first quarter or is it a major that requires a lot of pre-requisites before I can transfer.

How is Picnic day Like?

Bump. Disregard Calculus because I plan or intend to retake it.

You’ll get 4 units of credit for Bio as a science major, 8 if not.

APs do NOT count towards GE requirements, but community college classes do, as long as the credits are transferable.

8 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 24; 34 if the foreign language classes are transferable. You’ll count as a freshman either way. 45 units is the next level up.

If you’re going to switch to the College of Biological Sciences, you won’t have a foreign language requirement unless you’re going for a BA. Your APUSH score fulfills the American History and Institutions requirement.

You WILL need to complete (assuming you’re a BioSci major) three courses each under the areas of Social Sciences (SocSci) and Arts and Humanities (ArtHum). You also need to take three writing (Wrt) courses and one social-cultural diversity (Div) course. With your two PHI courses, you knock off two ArtHum and two Wrt, and PHI 14 gives credit for Div too, so you’ve got that out of the way. What’s left is 3 SocSci, 1 ArtHum, and 1 Wrt. Not too bad.

There’s also the English Composition requirement. It’s one lower div and one upper div class from a list of courses you get to choose from. You could try to bypass this by taking the English Composition Exam, but you’re allowed to take it only after you have 70 units.

You get to change your major after first quarter, I believe, but there’s really no rush–unless you’re currently undeclared - life sciences. Then they want you to declare your major before you complete 90 units. Otherwise, any change of major or college can be done before your last quarter at Davis begins.

Haven’t been to Picnic Day and will likely miss the bulk of it this year. :frowning: But it sounds really fun. I hear the Optics Club has this secret agent laser obstacle course thing set up. heheh

Nice! It’s a bummer that those foreign language classes don’t count for much, but I am pleasantly surprised by how many courses Phil knocks out. Thank you so much for your post!

So if I am aiming for a BS my Foreign Language courses (15 quarter units) are really pointless and don’t cover any breadth requirements? :(

APs do NOT count towards GE requirements, but community college classes do, as long as the credits are transferable.

does mean for every uc or just ucd

Well… not completely. Given those credits are transferable, you’d be a little higher up the list come registration time for having more units, so you won’t be one of the kids struggling to get into a Chem or Bio class (though you’re also not guaranteed to get the times you want to make a perfect schedule).

Punjabi: I’m not sure. You should ask around the other forums.

all the UC’s have the same transfer agreement with every JC in california make sure you check assist.org
