Need desperate help!

This decision thing is driving me crazy! I'm a sophomore who wants to transfer (see other post on this board) and I've been researching since the middle of last semester, looking at websites, requesting brochures etc. etc. But I'm having a bit of a crisis and I was wondering if there are any English majors AND/OR transfers that could help me out. Thanks so much!! :)

anyone? there must be some english majors at least...

I guess no one's feelin' your desperation, love. ;)
English is the most popular major at Wes, just as it is at just about every LAC I know of, with the possible exception of Washington and Lee (where I think it's Accounting.) I was almost an English major. What is it you need to know?

I just want to know what the classes and professors are like. For example, are the classes mostly exam or paper based? How good are the discussions in class? Are the students passionate about reading & the major? Are the requirements hard to fulfill and can you take a broad range of classes/genres? How hard is the grading there? Are the professors friendly, do they really care about the students etc.?

Thanks! I'm getting a bit sick of reading the same old info from the websites! ;)

I can't remember a single English class at Wes where I thought, "Oh, no -- I've made a big mistake taking this!" If you stick to what interests you, the reading (though, there may be a lot of it) won't be hard. And it's not like Physics where you're expected to complete a certain sequence of courses before you can go on to, for example, "Shakespeare and Chaucer"; it's just a big department with lots of interesting professors and courses to choose from. The one disadvantage you have as a transfer is that it's probably too late to enroll in the College of Letters (COL) which is for hard-core cigarette smokers and PIBs (people dressed in black.)

Hmm, I did speak to one student who was a transfer who did wind up managing to become a COL major - if you're interested in the program, you should talk to the department and find out about special arrangements. When you visit the school, you should talk to Laurie Nussdorfer or someone else from the COL department.

Since you've been reading up on the website, I guess you have read about the details of each of the major programs, but if you haven't, make sure to look through the course catalog at www.wesleyan.edu/wesmaps where there's a listing of all the classes currently offered and not currently offered, as well as the requirements for each major. Do the classes in the English department look interesting to you? That's really the most important thing :)!

That's funny, john. I wouldn't call myself a PIB or smoker so I'm not sure if that's the program for me. ;) And thanks madjoy. Yes I have seen wesmaps. I love how they organize classes into which fulfill requirements and so on. The reason I like the sound of the English dept. at Wes is because there are SO many courses offered. I guess I know a lot less about the students themselves (even the stereotypes) and the atmosphere (both in the classroom and socially). I will be doing a visit but I just visited Brown and loved the whole campus & atmosphere so I really wanna love Wes as much! :)
