I want to write my college essay about something I have a passion for, but this activity shows up nowhere in my resume because I discovered it a little late. Would it be a bad idea to write about it?
Also, the essay would be more about my passion for this thing than about my good qualities…is that okay?? I mean I wouldn’t blatantly state my good qualities…maybe they can infer things from what I write.
The essay is supposed to tell the admissions people something that they would not know from your application. If you can write an engaging essay about this activity I would think that it would make a great subject.
It needs to show them traits they want in the class. Not be random.
If you have a “passion,” it needs to be relevant to them, to college activities, strengths, etc. They aren’t picking you because you did whatever or love whatever.
This isn’t a general essay for hs. It’s an application. Can you imagine applying for a job with an essay about a topic important to you, that tells something new about you…but offering no insight into the qualities they look for?
So I still say you need to understand what they want to learn about you. That comes first.

It can be fine to do this if you are seriously interested in and have meaningfully engaged in this activity.
Also, the college essay is not about LISTING your good traits, it is about EXEMPLIFYING your good traits: i.e. your essay should exemplify intelligence, thoughtfulness, curiosity, etc.
Yes, helps to see it as exemplifying (maybe a better term than ‘show not tell.’) That’s through carefully considered, relevant examples, gently inserted.
Still need an idea of what those colleges do look for and what topic is the right vehicle.
Thanks all!
